As of 2026, there have not been any significant updates to the different clay sealers available on the market. If you have any questions about the best type of clay sealer for your project, please ask me in our Q&A area below. I am here to help!

Bricks commonly comprise several components: clay, concrete, stone, ceramic, lime, and/or sand. Different materials have different bonding qualities. For those using clay pavers, I recommend choosing the best sealer that will bond to the clay components and give it a beautiful, long-lasting finish.

I do not recommend using either a wet-look sealer or a gloss sealer for clay pavers. When they react with the clay, they tend to dry, blotchy, and unevenly. Wet-look and gloss sealers work very well with concrete brick pavers, so we recommend you seal your concrete brick pavers with wet-look and gloss sealers for a shiny, long-lasting, beautiful finish.

Certain paver sealers bring out the pavers’ natural colors while locking out moisture, which helps maintain and increase their longevity. The sealer also helps solidify the sand joints and can help with weed growth and freeze/thaw damage in colder climates.

There are several different finishes involved with paver sealers. A matte finish will not alter the appearance of the pavers at all but will still preserve the surface and keep out unwanted moisture. All paver sealers help solidify sand joints between pavers, lock out unwanted moisture, reduce weed growth, reduce freeze-thaw damage, and create a beautiful, long-lasting finish. In terms of the final finish of a sealer, a matte finish will not alter the appearance of the pavers, while a shiny paver sealer will leave a glossy appearance. A wet-look sealer will leave the pavers looking wet even after the sealer has dried but is not designed to add shine.

Always follow the application methods recommended by the manufacturer. In addition, it is best only to apply sealers to a clean, dirt-free surface. Therefore, washing the surface properly is highly recommended before applying any sealer. Not doing so may jeopardize the sealer’s effectiveness and longevity.

Acrylic-based paver sealers are formulated to seal and protect concrete and brick pavers, leaving a wet look and high gloss finish. They can be applied to previously coated or bare surfaces. Many acrylic-based paver sealers are sold at local hardware, big box stores, and paint outlets. Doing some research on acrylic-based paver sealers leaves quite a bit of concern. When I tested these products, they performed less than expected, and some even made the surface look worse than before the application.

One of the problems reported by homeowners using acrylic-based paver sealers is an overall lack of gloss. These products are marketed to leave a beautiful “wet look” glossy finish, but in most cases, even after applying two coats, the finish has a matte sheen at best. Many customers leaving reviews report mainly a lack of that deep, rich look they were hoping for. Joint sand hardening is average, but nowhere near the solidity, a quality solvent-based paver sealer will provide.

Every interlocking brick paver system involves the use of joint sand. This joint sand helps to reduce paver movement by bonding the system together. It is also a vital part of prohibiting weed growth, insect infestation, and sand washout. The proper type of sand needs to be used for the best results. Polymeric sand is highly recommended because once it is applied to the joints, it reacts with misted water and creates a binding agent that helps solidify the sand and locks the pavers together.

The best polymeric sand to use is a brand like Surebond. This special polymeric sand will bind the sand particles together when reacted with water but will not cause a problem known as poly haze. Poly haze is what happens when there is polymeric sand left on the surface of the pavers after the sand has been swept into the cracks. The pavers are then misted with water to activate the binding agent but in turn, it also reacts with the left behind layer of surface sand, creating a white haze.
