Surebond SB-4000 Concrete Sealer Review

Surebond SB-4000 is a water-based acrylic sealer with advanced polymer technology, designed for all concrete surfaces. It is marketed as a low-VOC alternative to traditional solvent-based sealers, while still delivering excellent water repellency.

Unlike older acrylics, SB-4000 aims to provide better durability and reduced issues like whitening or hazing, which are common with lower-end sealers.

Surebond SB-4000 Quick Verdict

Surebond SB-4000 is a high-quality water-based sealer that offers a good balance of appearance, durability, and easier maintenance.

  • Best for: All concrete surfaces
  • Finish: No shine or gloss
  • Type: Water-based acrylic / hybrid polymer
  • Longevity: 4+ years

It’s a strong option for those wanting less odor and fewer application risks compared to solvent-based sealers.

I have found that the SB-4000 Water Repelling Invisible Sealer is a water-based, penetrating, low VOC sealer that provides an invisible, durable barrier against liquid absorption on retaining walls, concrete, and pavers. The finish has a natural look that does not affect the appearance of the substrate.

Concrete Sealer Ingredients: Blend of  Siloxanes

Concrete Sealer Type: Penetrating Clear Sealer

SB-4000 Concrete Sealer Scores (1-10)

Ease of Application: 10

– The SB-4000 is very easy to apply and dries within an hour. I used a Chapin concrete sealer sprayer and applied 5 gallons of the sealer to 750 sq. feet in under 20 minutes.

Water Repellency: 9

Surebond SB-4000 has excellent water repellency for the brick blocks. Water beaded up, and there was very little penetration, even with a heavy flow of water on the surface.

Cost per foot: 7

The Surebond SB-4000 is one of the more expensive sealers on the market. It does offer very good results, though. My cost to apply it was about $.25 a sq. foot, almost double that of other brands.

Durability/Spalling After 2 Years: 8

After two years, the Surebond 4000 still beaded up water, and there were no visible hairline cracks or pitting on the blocks. Conditions were virtually the same but with a small amount of mold and green algae.

Warranty: 6

The manufacturer is very vague on the warranty and has no actual dates.

My Overall Score SB-4000 Concrete Sealer: 8

The SB-4000 would have been rated higher without the warranty. We like concrete sealer warranties that protect for 5, 6, or more years. Besides the warranty, the SB-4000 is an excellent and capable concrete sealer and water repellent.

*The application is excellent, works well, and repels water, but the warranty is vague.

It is ideal when you want balanced performance and easier application without the risks of solvent-based sealers.

Where Surebond SB-4000 Does NOT Perform Well

Avoid using SB-4000 in these situations:

  • Areas requiring a high-gloss wet look
  • Heavy commercial or industrial environments
  • Surfaces with existing incompatible sealers
  • Situations where maximum durability is the only priority

Application Tips (Important for Results)

Even though SB-4000 is more forgiving, prep still matters.

Before applying:

  • Clean the surface thoroughly
  • Remove any failing sealers
  • Allow the surface to fully dry

Application tips:

  • Apply thin, even coats
  • Use a sprayer
  • Avoid over-application
  • Apply in proper weather conditions

Durability and Maintenance

SB-4000 offers solid durability for a water-based acrylic system.

  • Expect 2–4+ years of lifespan

  • Easy to recoat

Surebond SB-4000 vs Solvent-Based Sealers

Compared to products like SuperSeal25 or SuperSeal30:

  • Less odor and easier to apply
  • Lower risk of whitening/blushing
  • More natural finish (no gloss)
  • Slightly less color enhancement
  • Comparable or slightly improved maintenance cycle

It’s a great alternative for users who want performance without the downsides of solvent-based products.

Used SB4000 on brick walk. It was very thin in consistency. Can two coats be put on? Can you use another sealer like Thompsons on top of it?

I am debating on what to use on my driveway that has different colors due to repairs (it looks like previous owners had some parts of the driveway repaired and the color of the driveway is different in places). Also i have pitted areas and black spots that I cannot remove with a driveway cleaner and a pressure washer. Which product would you recommend that is affordable and would prevent the "green mold" and brownish stains from re-appearing on my driveway (part that stays mostly in the shade during the day).
Thank you for your help 🙂

Sprayed on my pavers and they turned chalky white. The pavers were clean and had dried for 48 hours before application. Very dissatisfied! Is there any way I can get this sealer off?

Please explain but what you mean by "This product is not a paver sealer." i thought SB-4000 is marketed for sealing pavers. thanks
