Different Concrete Surfaces and Best Sealer to Use

Decorative Concrete:

This is any concrete surface that is not simply a means of construction but is also altered to enhance its beauty. Concrete is transformed into a decorative piece while still serving as an integral part of the building process, such as floors, walls, driveways, or patios. The altering of concrete to enhance its beauty is accomplished through a number of procedures, such as stamping, acid staining, polishing, coloring, overlaying, and more.

Sealer Type: Use a sealer that enhances the color tones with a wet look. Typically, these are acrylic sealers that are either water- or solvent-based. If solvent, use a “styrene” acrylic to allow moisture to escape. These come in a Gloss, Semi-Gloss, Satin, and No Gloss.

Wet Look: 10

SuperSeal30 contains 30% solid acrylic. It darkened our 4-year-old paver patio as if wet and stayed that way after drying. It enhanced the natural red and brown tones in our paver bricks.

Gloss Level: 8

The high solid content of the SuperSeal gave our paver patio a high-gloss shine. The overall appearance on our test patio was quite rich-looking but not so shiny that it looked “fake.” The sealer was slightly slippery for the first couple of weeks when it rained, but after complete curing, that was not an issue.

Super Seal 25 Concrete Sealer Review

SuperSeal25 is a Semi-Gloss Concrete Sealer for Brick Paver Patios, Exposed Aggregate, and Stamped Concrete. It darkens the appearance and leaves a shine similar to a semi-gloss.

The SuperSeal25 is a 25% solid solvent-based, breathable acrylic sealer and curing compound suitable for use on interior and exterior concrete surfaces.

SuperSeal25 Paver and Concrete Sealer Ratings (1-10)

Wet Look: 10

SuperSeal25 darkened the paver driveway very well, giving the surface a much-needed enhanced look. All the pavers’ colors stood out, restoring the original look.

Gloss Level: 8

SuperSeal25 contains 25% solids, which leaves our driveway with a semi-gloss shine. The sealer dried in a few hours, and we were able to drive on the surface the next day.

SUPER SEAL-M is a water-based Silicone Water Repellent made of a unique hybrid of Silane and Siloxane. It provides water repellency to porous construction materials such as bricks, stone, concrete blocks, mortar, and grout. However, it is not suitable for very low-porosity substrates such as polished stone.

The active ingredients in the SUPER SEAL-M Water Repellent Sealer are a mixture of different-sized particles, some larger and some smaller, to fill different-sized voids. This ensures good penetration into porous substrates, resulting in good coverage and durable water repellency. The active ingredients in SUPER SEAL-M Water Repellent can chemically react with the substrate, ensuring long-lasting performance.

My SuperSeal M Concrete Water Repellent Scores (1-10)

Ease of Application: 10

I applied the SuperSeal M to a new concrete driveway the day after installation. SuperSeal explicitly states that the sealer can be applied to new concrete as soon as the beaded water is gone from the installation. We used 5 gallons for the 1000 sq. feet. It took 30 minutes to apply, and I did not have any issues.

Water Repellency: 8

After three days, I tested the water beading with the garden hose. All of the water beaded up on the driveway with a light mist. A heavier saturation, and the water still did not penetrate the concrete.

MasonrySaver Heavy Duty Water Repellent

MasonrySaver® (Also known as “Defy”) All-Purpose Heavy Duty Water Repellent is a modified siloxane-based product designed to penetrate most masonry and concrete pores deeply. Unlike acrylics, silicones, and other waterproofing sealers that remain on the surface and trap water vapors, this masonry waterproofing product allows deep penetration of its active ingredient of up to 1/4 inch or more. This proprietary blend of silanes and siloxanes creates a “SaltShield™” barrier on concrete surfaces for more excellent resistance to the deteriorating effects of road salts and de-icing chemicals. This 100% breathable concrete waterproofing product is an excellent choice for horizontal and vertical above-grade surfaces.

My MasonrySaver Heavy Duty Water Repellent Scores (1-10)

Ease of Application: 10

Using a plastic pump sprayer, I applied the MasonrySaver Heavy Duty Water Repellent to a 1000 sq. foot driveway. The sealer goes on milky white and dries clear in about 20 minutes. It took less than 30 minutes to seal the entire driveway.

Water Repellency: 8

I waited a day after the application and then did a water test. The water did bead up well and did not penetrate into the concrete.

A premium interior/exterior waterproofing formula that uses the latest water-based silicone technology designed to penetrate surfaces up to 1/2″. This waterproofer creates a barrier inside the surface that keeps water out, but lets trapped water vapors escape; reducing corrosion, spalling, efflorescence, and freeze-thaw damage. It reduces staining due to mold, mildew, algae growth and ensures greater durability of the surface. The protection is not worn away with normal use. It protects long after the water beading is gone!

Concrete Sealer Type: Invisible Water Repellent. It does not change the appearance.

Behr Premium Waterproofer Scores (1-10)

Ease of Application: 7

– The Behr Premium Waterproofer is very thin in consistency and looks like you are applying white water. The issue we had is that the sprayer kept getting clogged from large white chunks in the sealer. After running the sealer through a screen, we did not have any more issues. Very frustrating though!

Water Repellency: 7

– After a few days, we tested the Behr Premium Waterproofer with a hose. Light saturation of the water and it beaded well. Heavy saturation and the sealer did not repel the water very well.

Concrete Sealers are used to protect and enhance all types of Interior and Exterior concrete surfaces. They can provide water repellency for driveways and brick walls or enhancement for decorative concrete surfaces such as Stamped Patios or Pavers.

In this article, we will look at the many different types of Concrete Sealers, Coatings, and Water Repellents.

Concrete Sealers and Water Repellents

Concrete sealants and water repellents are the most popular of concrete coatings. These sealers are designed to penetrate deep into the surface without filming on top. They typically do not change the appearance of the surface. These sealers are composed mainly of different types of silicones. Silane, siloxane, and silox are the most common forms used. These particles penetrate deep into the concrete, reacting with the alkali. This creates an internal bond that seals out water, dirt, grime, and common spills. These sealers work exceptionally well and do come in different solids amounts ranging from 8-24%. Higher solids are typically for a very porous block while lower solids are for smoother concrete surfaces.

Available in both water-based and solvent-based formulas.

Pros: Very easy to apply. Typically lasts 4-6 years for most applications.
