The Best Clay Paver Sealer

As of 2026, there have not been any significant updates to the different clay sealers available on the market. If you have any questions about the best type of clay sealer for your project, please ask me in our Q&A area below. I am here to help!

Bricks commonly comprise several components: clay, concrete, stone, ceramic, lime, and/or sand. Different materials have different bonding qualities. For those using clay pavers, I recommend choosing the best sealer that will bond to the clay components and give it a beautiful, long-lasting finish.

I do not recommend using either a wet-look sealer or a gloss sealer for clay pavers. When they react with the clay, they tend to dry, blotchy, and unevenly. Wet-look and gloss sealers work very well with concrete brick pavers, so we recommend you seal your concrete brick pavers with wet-look and gloss sealers for a shiny, long-lasting, beautiful finish.

We recommend you coat your concrete with a high-quality sealer that will increase the lifespan. Concrete is under constant pressure and withstands a lot of stress from weather, temperature changes, salt corrosion, foot traffic, and cars. When choosing a sealer for your concrete, keep in mind that wet-look and gloss sealers will not work on plain poured concrete, as they tend to dry blotchy, and uneven. Wet look and gloss sealers work very well with decorative concrete surfaces such as concrete brick pavers and stamped concrete.

Certain paver sealers bring out the pavers’ natural colors while locking out moisture, which helps maintain and increase their longevity. The sealer also helps solidify the sand joints and can help with weed growth and freeze/thaw damage in colder climates.

There are several different finishes involved with paver sealers. A matte finish will not alter the appearance of the pavers at all but will still preserve the surface and keep out unwanted moisture. Always follow the application methods recommended by the manufacturer. In addition, it is best only to apply sealers to a clean, dirt-free surface. Most concrete surfaces will last a very long time when they are properly maintained. Maintaining a concrete surface is no different than other surfaces, it just needs to be cleaned periodically and protected from the elements. Harsh weather and climate can take their toll on concrete that is not waterproofed. When water and moisture are able to penetrate the concrete, it can cause all types of problems. Most notably, constant moisture can create mold, mildew, and algae buildup. This can break down the concrete over time and is extremely unsightly. It can also create a slippery when wet surface, which can be dangerous.

In climates that see below-freezing weather in the Winter, freeze and thaw damage is very common. When moisture penetrates the concrete and freezes, it expands. This can cause chipping, cracking, and heaving of the concrete, literally breaking it up and ruining the structure. Repairing this type of damage can be costly. The good news is that it is avoidable with some regular maintenance. The best protection you can give any type of concrete surface is to waterproof it so water and moisture cannot penetrate the surface.
