Scott Paul ~ Restoring Concrete Since 1993

I am Scott Paul, and I have worked in exterior restoration since 1993. My background is wood and deck restoration, and my crews and I restored more than 10,000 decks across Metro Detroit. That work always included the concrete, brick pavers and stamped surfaces sitting alongside them. ConcreteSealerReview.com covers sealers for those surfaces. I test them the way I test everything else: on real projects, in real weather, over multiple seasons. I also own and operate DeckStainHelp.com, the independent wood and deck restoration resource, which runs on the same testing standard and the same independence policy. Neither review site accepts payment from manufacturers for reviews, ratings or placement.

Adding Non Slip Additive to Paver Sealers

by Scott Paul ~ Restoring Concrete Since 1993 February 24, 2024

Update for 2026 – Adding Non-Slip Additive to Paver Sealers

Concrete Sealer Review is back in 2026 with the latest tips and trends for your concrete and brick paver sealers. Some pavers can become slippery when they are wet, like on pool decks. In this updated article, we tell you the best way to add a non-slip component to paver sealers to make your surfaces safe. If you have any suggestions for the best way to add a non-slip additive to paver sealers or have any questions, please comment below.

Some paver sealers can create a “slippery when wet” scenario. This is more evident with the high gloss or wet look type of paver sealers. You can create more traction to a sealer by adding a non-slip additive to the paver sealer before it is applied. The non-slip additive is mixed into the sealer prior to the application.

Non-slip additives like Super Grip will only work with sealers that leave a film on the paver surface to enhance the appearance. It works best when it is mixed in and applied with the second coat. It will not work with a single coat on surfaces that have not been previously sealed. Non-slip additives will not work with sealers that penetrate into the paver surface and do not alter the appearance.

Different types of concrete surfaces to be sealed.

Decorative Concrete – This is any concrete surface that is not simply a means of construction but is also altered to enhance its beauty. The concrete is also transformed into a decorative piece while still serving as an integral part of the building process, such as floors, walls, driveways, or patios. The altering of concrete to enhance its beauty is accomplished through a number of procedures such as stamping, acid staining, polishing, coloring, overlaying, and more.

Brick Wall Sealer

Brick Wall Sealer

My Best Sealer for Brick Walls to Prevent Water Penetration

Bricks are used for many aspects of construction and are considered one of the strongest and longest-lasting building materials in history. They can be made of clay, concrete, stone, ceramic, or lime and sand. Like other exterior building materials, a brick wall should be sealed to slow the effects of weathering. When moisture is allowed to penetrate the brick, the damaging effects can cause cracking, breaking, crumbling, and efflorescence problems.

How to Identify and Remove Poly Sand Haze on Brick Pavers (2026 Guide)

by Scott Paul ~ Restoring Concrete Since 1993 June 19, 2025

I am Scott Paul, a leading exterior paver restoration contractor and business owner with over 30 years of experience in sealing and protecting. For info about who I am, please read my full bio here.

What Is Poly Sand Haze?

Poly sand haze—often called “white haze” or “paver haze”—is a milky film that appears on brick paver surfaces after polymeric sand is installed and activated with water. It happens when fine dust from the polymeric sand isn’t fully removed before wetting, allowing the binder in the sand to stick to the paver surface. The result is a white, cloudy appearance that can be difficult to remove once set.

Poly Sand White HazeWhy Does Poly Sand Haze Occur?

Here’s how it typically happens:

  • Pavers are laid on a compacted sand base.

  • Polymeric sand is swept into the joints.

  • Before misting with water, the leftover poly dust on the surface should be thoroughly blown or swept off.

  • If the surface isn’t cleaned properly, water activates the polymer in the dust—leaving behind a hazy white coating.

Cleaning Efflorescence on Bricks

I am committed to being your go-to source for the latest tips and trends for your concrete and brick paver sealers through 2026 and beyond. Efflorescence, a white deposit of water-soluble salts, is a common problem with brick. This updated article explains how to clean efflorescence from your bricks and restore them to look new. Please comment below if you have encountered efflorescence on your bricks and have any suggestions or questions.

How to Clean White Efflorescence from Concrete

Efflorescence Brick PaversEfflorescence is a white deposit of water-soluble salts that can appear on masonry bricks. It can be a fine, powdery substance or a crystallized buildup. Depending on the type of salts present, they can also appear green, brown, or yellow. Efflorescence happens when soluble alkalis are present in the brick or grout, and moisture is able to penetrate the brick, forcing salt deposits to the surface. This can happen a month after the brick was laid or as long as a year later.

How To Fix Concrete Sealer Bubbles 2026

by Scott Paul ~ Restoring Concrete Since 1993 April 12, 2026

I am Scott Paul, a leading exterior paver restoration contractor and business owner with over 30 years of experience in sealing and protecting. For info about who I am, please read my full bio here.

My Tips To Fix Concrete Sealer Bubbles

I often hear and see those pesky bubbles appearing in finished concrete sealer projects. In this updated article, I will explain how to avoid and fix concrete sealer bubbles. If you have encountered concrete sealer bubbles and have any suggestions or questions, please comment below.

Concrete Sealer Bubbles

Concrete Sealer Bubbles

Solvent-based Acrylic Concrete Sealers are designed to enhance, darken, and give a sheen to decorative concrete surfaces.  Unfortunately, when misapplied or overapplied, you may have issues with “bubbles” forming in the sealer. This typically happens to Stamped Concrete or smooth decorative concrete surfaces.

When a solvent-based acrylic sealer is applied, some sealer penetrates into the porous concrete. If the application is too thick, or if too many coatings are applied, the solvent is not able to evaporate before the sealer dries. When that happens, the solvent gets trapped and eventually creates enough pressure that it forces its way out, creating bubbles.

Paver Sealer Turned White! How to Fix?

by Scott Paul ~ Restoring Concrete Since 1993 January 25, 2025

Hi, I am Scott Paul, a leading exterior brick paver restoration contractor and business owner with over 30 years of experience in exterior paver prep and stripping. For info about who I am, please read my full bio here.

2026 Paver Sealer Turned White

I often hear about the appearance of a Pavement Sealer that has turned white. I explain how to fix a white Pavement Sealer in this updated article. If you have encountered any issues and have any suggestions or questions, please comment below.

Protecting pavers from the elements is key to preserving their appearance and extending their lifespan. Periodically applying a high-quality paver sealer helps block moisture, protect against UV fading, and reduce weed, moss, and mildew growth in the joints and on the surface. Additionally, a good paver sealer can minimize sand joint erosion, keeping your pavers secure and well-maintained.

However, not all paver sealers are created equal. Many homeowners have shared frustrations about inferior sealers, with the most common issue being a milky white or cloudy appearance on the paver surface. This unsightly discoloration occurs when a low-quality sealer fails, leaving an unattractive finish that can be challenging to fix. A white haze is a clear sign of sealer failure, and addressing it requires a thorough process to restore the pavers to their original beauty.

How to Water Proof Concrete

by Scott Paul ~ Restoring Concrete Since 1993 August 20, 2026

Update for 2026: Water Proof Concrete

In this revised piece, we provide a guide on Waterproofing Concrete. If you have come across any obstacles or have proposals for improvement or have any inquiries, feel free to leave a comment below.

How to Waterproof Exterior Concrete, Brick, and Masonry

When water is able to penetrate the concrete, it can cause all sorts of damage. Water and moisture absorption causes concrete to swell, which can lead to pitting, cracking, and heaving. In colder climates, freeze and thaw damage is a major concern. As the water gets into the concrete and freezes it expands causing major damage if neglected.

To prevent damage to the concrete, the surface should be waterproofed. Waterproofing concrete creates a water-repellent barrier to lock out moisture. This stops all water-related damage from occurring. In addition, waterproofing concrete will also prevent spills and stains from penetrating and potentially leaving permanent staining.

Waterproofing exterior wood rather than concrete? DeckStainHelp reviews the water sealers homeowners reach for most, including a detailed look at how Thompson’s WaterSeal actually performs over time.

To waterproof concrete, the surface should first be cleaned properly. Use a concrete cleaner and a high-pressure washer to remove all dirt, grime, mildew, and other contaminants. Spot treat and clean any oil or grease spots with a degreaser. Clean any irrigation rust with a rust remover. Once the concrete is clean allow it to dry for 1-2 days.

Choose a concrete sealer that best fits your needs. Some sealers penetrate into the concrete pores while others protect by forming a film on top of the surface. You may want to use a waterproof sealer that leaves a gloss or wet look appearance, or you may want something that does not alter the appearance of the concrete at all.

Once the concrete is dry and ready to be waterproofed, use a leaf blower or broom to remove any debris. Mask off any areas where you do not want sealer – like house siding, landscaping, etc. Use a roller or pump sprayer to apply the sealer. Try to work in small sections, applying just enough water and roof sealer to coat the surface. Do not overapply. Apply one to two coats, following the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Knowing how to waterproof concrete is a great way to save money by doing the project yourself. Most waterproof concrete sealers are user-friendly and easy to apply. Keep your concrete surfaces looking good and lasting a lifetime with a waterproof protectant.

Best Sealer for a Garage Floor

by Scott Paul ~ Restoring Concrete Since 1993 August 20, 2026

Best Sealer for a Garage Floor 0224

I discuss the Best Sealer for a Garage Floor in this updated article. If you have encountered any issues, have suggestions, or have questions, please comment below.

Best Sealer for a Garage Floor to prevent oil stains and make cleanup easier.

Garage floors can be a pain to keep clean and looking good. Because garage floor concrete is porous, it quickly absorbs moisture and stains, such as automotive oil and coolant. Once these stains penetrate the concrete, they are hard to remove.

Best Garage Floor SealerThe best sealer for a garage floor will resist unwanted staining and keep water and moisture from penetrating the concrete and causing damage. A garage floor sealer application will also increase the floor’s appearance and make it easier to maintain. Unwanted fluids and stains can be cleaned up more quickly on sealed concrete than on unprotected concrete.

Looking for a sealer for a wood deck floor? Choosing a finish for exterior wood involves the same trade-off between appearance and protection. DeckStainHelp breaks down solid versus semi-transparent stains and what each one hides or shows.
