What Sealer is Best for Stamped Concrete Patios

Stamped concrete is a decorative surface that has become popular in the last 10-20 years. These surfaces utilize patterns and different colors to create a dramatic look for your landscaping. Stamped concrete is patterned to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile, wood, and other patterns. It is commonly used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks.

Before and After Stamped Concrete Sealing

As with any exterior concrete surface, stamped concrete surfaces must be maintained consistently. Sealing will help keep your Stamped Concrete looking new and protected for many years.

To determine what Stamped Concrete Sealer is best, you must first understand the differences between the different types of stamped concrete sealers and what you would like to achieve when it comes to appearance and protection when done.

Stamped Concrete Sealers have four primary functions

  • Enhance the Stamped Concrete by adding a wet look, shine, or both.
  • Protects the Stamped Concrete from pitting and cracking.
  • Protect the Stamped Concrete from color loss and fading
  • Seals from water damage and staining.

Wet Look Stamped Concrete Sealer?

“Wet look” sometimes gets confused with “gloss.” Using a sealer that leaves a “wet look” means darkening the surface as if wet with water. These sealers may or may not contain a shine level of some sort. Wet-look sealers will also protect from UV fading and color loss.

Gloss Stamped Concrete Sealers?

Gloss sealers, ranging from matte to high gloss, will shine to the surface. In most scenarios, you will also darken the concrete with a wet look. These sealers may be prone to being slippery when wet if over-applied.

Preventing Pitting/Cracking Stamped Concrete?

One reason to seal Stamped Concrete is to protect it from pitting and cracking. This is especially important for cold-weather areas where deicing salts are used, which can result in erosion of the surface by pitting, or the freeze/thaw cycle can create permanent cracks if the stamped concrete is not sealed.

🛒 Buyer’s Guide – Choosing the Best Stamped Concrete Sealer

Stamped concrete is both decorative and functional, but it needs protection to maintain its beauty and durability. Choosing the right sealer depends on your finish preference, exposure conditions, and local VOC regulations.

✅ 1. Gloss Level – Wet Look or Matte?

Finish Type Appearance Recommended For Examples
High Gloss Rich color enhancement & shine Patios, pool decks, decorative areas SuperSeal 30
Semi-Gloss Slight shine, moderate enhancement Entryways, driveways SuperSeal 25
Wet Look / No Gloss Darkens surface with no film gloss Natural aesthetic, less slipperiness Supreme Shield SB-600
Satin/Low Gloss Subtle enhancement Residential areas with foot traffic Super Seal-Matte

💡 Glossy finishes are more eye-catching but can become slippery when wet. For safety, consider non-slip additives.

✅ 2. Solvent-Based vs. Water-Based Sealers

Feature Solvent-Based Acrylics Water-Based Acrylics
Color Enhancement Strong Mild to moderate
Gloss High Matte to low gloss
Recoat Compatibility Easier May require stripping
VOC Compliance Limited in some states Typically compliant
Durability Very good Moderate

⚠️ Always check local VOC regulations before selecting a solvent-based product.

✅ 3. Expected Longevity and Resealing Frequency

  • Acrylic Sealers (Solvent or Water-Based): Reseal every 2–3 years

  • Penetrating Sealers: May last up to 5+ years depending on exposure

  • UV & Moisture Exposure: Accelerates wear; reseal more frequently for full sun areas

✅ 4. Ease of Application

Stamped concrete sealers are generally DIY-friendly:

  • Use a pump sprayer or 1/2″ nap roller

  • Apply 2 thin coats for best results

  • Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and fully cured

🧼 Remove any previous failed coatings or trapped moisture to avoid peeling.

✅ 5. VOC Compliance by State

States with low-VOC laws (e.g., CA, NY, NJ, IL) may restrict certain high-solvent sealers like SuperSeal 30. Use low-VOC water-based or penetrating alternatives like:

  • MasonrySaver Stamped Concrete Sealer

  • Supreme Shield SB-600 (VOC-compliant in most regions)

❓ Frequently Asked Questions – Stamped Concrete Sealers

What is the best sealer for stamped concrete?

The best sealer for stamped concrete is typically a solvent-based acrylic that provides a wet look while offering UV, stain, and abrasion resistance. SuperSeal 30, Foundation Armor AR350, and Supreme Shield SB-600 are top-rated choices depending on your desired finish (gloss vs. satin) and location (VOC restrictions).

What’s the difference between a wet look and natural finish sealer?

  • Wet look sealers enhance the color of stamped concrete and leave a glossy or semi-gloss film.

  • Natural finish sealers provide protection without significantly changing the appearance, resulting in a more matte or invisible finish.

💡 Wet look sealers are more popular for decorative patios and pool decks, while natural finishes are often chosen for subtle enhancement.

How often should you reseal stamped concrete?

Stamped concrete should be resealed every 2 to 3 years depending on foot traffic, UV exposure, and weather conditions. High-gloss finishes may dull faster in direct sunlight and require more frequent reapplication.

Can stamped concrete sealer make the surface slippery?

Yes, film-forming sealers—especially high-gloss ones—can become slippery when wet. To reduce slip hazards, use a non-slip additive or opt for a lower-gloss or penetrating sealer.

Can I apply stamped concrete sealer myself?

Yes. Most stamped concrete sealers can be applied with a sprayer or 1/2” nap roller. Surface prep is crucial—make sure the concrete is clean, dry, and free of previous failed coatings. Apply 2 thin coats for best results.

Hi, I have a stamped patio that was poured 4 years ago. It was cleaned and the sealer was reapplied 2 years ago by the company that poured it, but I already have the white haze that you speak of. I am at the 2 year point again to clean and reseal. What can I get in Winnipeg (Canada)? I looked at the Thompson's Water Seal, but it doesn't get a very good rating. Thanks!!

Stamped poured over concrete was sealed last year. Looks like it need to be resealed not shining as bright. Should I apply some xylene to renew the sealer or apply more sealer? It was sealed with Euclid diamond sealer a solvent based acrylic. I just don't want to create more work and have to strip old sealer off and reseal.

Thank you for responding so quickly. Does this need to be periodically reapplied? Since we are more interested in the concrete being the darker color it will turn once sealed (and not necessarily looking glossy), we are hoping for something low maintenance. Also, is this recommended over a solvent based seal for our purposes?

I have a stamped concrete sealer on my patio. It was sealed when originally installed. It has lost it luster and now I want to reseal it with a gloss dealer. However, I don't know whether the current sealer is water based or a solvent.based. Is there ant way that I can test it to determiner which it is, as I understand that if I apply the wrong type, it may not be compatible and create problems.

thanks,

You need to know if it is water or solving based be shure not to mix them you can get a roller with a 3/4 inch nap and another 5 gal bucket of sealer look for a concrete supply company there products are better quality open the top of bucket with a flat head screwdriver use the roller to roll on the sealer more is not better don't let it puddle if you have a mishap use xylene to clean up if solvent based put Styrofoam in pool and tap under lip of edge to catch any spill you don't… Read more »

I have a brand new stamped, colored cement patio that has been sealed by contractor, however, it does not have any shine and I'm afraid to use without properly sealed. It was suppose to have sheen they said. When called–no response. Is it possible the new cement soaked in sealant and needs additional coat? If so, what product do I use. Our stamped concrete patio around the pool has not been treated for about four years. There is currently no finish on it. Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer is not available here in Virginia but it was recommended that we use a W. R. Meadows product CS-309 – 30 OTC available locally. Are you familiar with this product? Would Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer be a better choice? We could order it online. Also would Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer build up over time and eventually have to be stripped?

MasterKure CC 300 XS (its a BASF "exempt" solvent-based acrylic.) Just finished ours. We had same situation and had been sealed before with other sealers, e,g, "Pebble Sheen" etc. Originally never had issues until the EPA or someone banned certain of the solvents. After two years or so, the newer available sealers yellowed and deteriorated in random spots…it was a mess. This time, at the suggestion of a professional concrete contractor we were luck to make contact with (he didn't want the job as he was far too busy but gave us excellent advice) we pre-treated with sprayed xylene to… Read more »
