What Sealer is Best for Stamped Concrete Patios
Stamped concrete is a decorative surface that has become popular in the last 10-20 years. These surfaces utilize patterns and different colors to create a dramatic look for your landscaping. Stamped concrete is patterned to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile, wood, and other patterns. It is commonly used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks.
As with any exterior concrete surface, stamped concrete surfaces must be maintained consistently. Sealing will help keep your Stamped Concrete looking new and protected for many years.
To determine what Stamped Concrete Sealer is best, you must first understand the differences between the different types of stamped concrete sealers and what you would like to achieve when it comes to appearance and protection when done.
Stamped Concrete Sealers have four primary functions
- Enhance the Stamped Concrete by adding a wet look, shine, or both.
- Protects the Stamped Concrete from pitting and cracking.
- Protect the Stamped Concrete from color loss and fading
- Seals from water damage and staining.
Wet Look Stamped Concrete Sealer?
“Wet look” sometimes gets confused with “gloss.” Using a sealer that leaves a “wet look” means darkening the surface as if wet with water. These sealers may or may not contain a shine level of some sort. Wet-look sealers will also protect from UV fading and color loss.
Gloss Stamped Concrete Sealers?
Gloss sealers, ranging from matte to high gloss, will shine to the surface. In most scenarios, you will also darken the concrete with a wet look. These sealers may be prone to being slippery when wet if over-applied.
Preventing Pitting/Cracking Stamped Concrete?
One reason to seal Stamped Concrete is to protect it from pitting and cracking. This is especially important for cold-weather areas where deicing salts are used, which can result in erosion of the surface by pitting, or the freeze/thaw cycle can create permanent cracks if the stamped concrete is not sealed.

🛒 Buyer’s Guide – Choosing the Best Stamped Concrete Sealer
Stamped concrete is both decorative and functional, but it needs protection to maintain its beauty and durability. Choosing the right sealer depends on your finish preference, exposure conditions, and local VOC regulations.
✅ 1. Gloss Level – Wet Look or Matte?
Finish Type | Appearance | Recommended For | Examples |
---|---|---|---|
High Gloss | Rich color enhancement & shine | Patios, pool decks, decorative areas | SuperSeal 30 |
Semi-Gloss | Slight shine, moderate enhancement | Entryways, driveways | SuperSeal 25 |
Wet Look / No Gloss | Darkens surface with no film gloss | Natural aesthetic, less slipperiness | Supreme Shield SB-600 |
Satin/Low Gloss | Subtle enhancement | Residential areas with foot traffic | Super Seal-Matte |
💡 Glossy finishes are more eye-catching but can become slippery when wet. For safety, consider non-slip additives.
✅ 2. Solvent-Based vs. Water-Based Sealers
Feature | Solvent-Based Acrylics | Water-Based Acrylics |
---|---|---|
Color Enhancement | Strong | Mild to moderate |
Gloss | High | Matte to low gloss |
Recoat Compatibility | Easier | May require stripping |
VOC Compliance | Limited in some states | Typically compliant |
Durability | Very good | Moderate |
⚠️ Always check local VOC regulations before selecting a solvent-based product.
✅ 3. Expected Longevity and Resealing Frequency
-
Acrylic Sealers (Solvent or Water-Based): Reseal every 2–3 years
-
Penetrating Sealers: May last up to 5+ years depending on exposure
-
UV & Moisture Exposure: Accelerates wear; reseal more frequently for full sun areas
✅ 4. Ease of Application
Stamped concrete sealers are generally DIY-friendly:
-
Use a pump sprayer or 1/2″ nap roller
-
Apply 2 thin coats for best results
-
Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and fully cured
🧼 Remove any previous failed coatings or trapped moisture to avoid peeling.
✅ 5. VOC Compliance by State
States with low-VOC laws (e.g., CA, NY, NJ, IL) may restrict certain high-solvent sealers like SuperSeal 30. Use low-VOC water-based or penetrating alternatives like:
-
MasonrySaver Stamped Concrete Sealer
-
Supreme Shield SB-600 (VOC-compliant in most regions)

❓ Frequently Asked Questions – Stamped Concrete Sealers
What is the best sealer for stamped concrete?
The best sealer for stamped concrete is typically a solvent-based acrylic that provides a wet look while offering UV, stain, and abrasion resistance. SuperSeal 30, Foundation Armor AR350, and Supreme Shield SB-600 are top-rated choices depending on your desired finish (gloss vs. satin) and location (VOC restrictions).
What’s the difference between a wet look and natural finish sealer?
-
Wet look sealers enhance the color of stamped concrete and leave a glossy or semi-gloss film.
-
Natural finish sealers provide protection without significantly changing the appearance, resulting in a more matte or invisible finish.
💡 Wet look sealers are more popular for decorative patios and pool decks, while natural finishes are often chosen for subtle enhancement.
How often should you reseal stamped concrete?
Stamped concrete should be resealed every 2 to 3 years depending on foot traffic, UV exposure, and weather conditions. High-gloss finishes may dull faster in direct sunlight and require more frequent reapplication.
Can stamped concrete sealer make the surface slippery?
Yes, film-forming sealers—especially high-gloss ones—can become slippery when wet. To reduce slip hazards, use a non-slip additive or opt for a lower-gloss or penetrating sealer.
Can I apply stamped concrete sealer myself?
Yes. Most stamped concrete sealers can be applied with a sprayer or 1/2” nap roller. Surface prep is crucial—make sure the concrete is clean, dry, and free of previous failed coatings. Apply 2 thin coats for best results.

Supreme Shield SB-600 – will using this sealer cause the patio to be slippery when it gets wet?
No, it should not.
Bought a 6 year old house 2 years ago. 6 year old stamped concrete pool deck and patio looked tired after our first year. We cleaner the surface (water and brushing, did not powerwash) and sealed 1 year ago with 1 coat of Sherwin Williams H&C Clarishield Oil Based sealer with some shark grip for slip resistance. Already have cloudy looking areas that are easy to flake off with screwdriver in some areas, also some white pitting areas appearing. Was the H&C the wrong product, did we need more coats, what product and process do you recommend we use this… Read more »
Wrong sealer brand was used and yes you will have to strip it all off: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/how-to-strip-a-stamped-concrete-sealer/
Once removed, try one of these brands: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/best-stamped-concrete-sealer/
I have a stamped concrete patio that has never been sealed – about 13 years old. Concrete is very porous, and has lost most of its color. It has hairline cracks in it. Will a sealer like Supreme Shield SB-600 help to hide those cracks? Pictures included. Crack next to the quarter (for size) is probably the largest one.
A sealer will not hide cracks or repair them
Anything to solve the slippery when wet problems
Add grip into the sealer.
What brand of “grip” can be added to . Supreme Shield SB-600?
It is a penetrating sealer, grips will not work with penetrating sealers.
This is five year old stamped concrete. It originally had a semi gloss sealant of unknown variety. In my pictures You can see what it looks like where it’s been exposed to the Houston, Texas sun, what it looks like wet, and the portion that has been protected under my patio.
I don’t want anything too shiny, but I also want something that will darken it up some. Not necessarily as much as the water does. Suggestions?
Try this: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/masonrysaver-decorative-concrete-sealer-review/
if you have a patterned concrete drive and the surface has started pitting which is the best sealer to use its a buff colour but where its pitted its a grey colour i was thinking of changing the colour to possibly grey which are the best products to do this and what prep is req and how many coats
You cannot change color of stamped concrete with a sealer. You would have to remove all current sealer, restain the concrete, then seal over. You may want to call a pro on this.
Do I have to remove the old sealer before resealing a dark gray stamped concrete driveway that is about 12 years old.(see photo 1) If you do not have to remove the old sealer, which high quality matte sealer can be used if you do not know what kind of sealer was used originally? Second photo is the section in the first photo that I sprayed with water
Yes, you will need to strip this: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/how-to-strip-a-paver-sealer/
We have been using Euclid’s Luster Seal 300 on our stamped sidewalk every year for several years, that is all that has gone on it. It is getting hazy and I wonder if there is anything better. We live 60 miles south of Seattle (not far enough) so our climate is rather mild.
Thanks for any recommendations you can provide.
Post a picture as you may need to strip.
Dull or maybe faded?
Looks mostly dull with maybe a little of the white haze. Try the Supreme Shield SB-600: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/supreme-shield-sb-600-wet-look-review/
how good is cobble loc paver sealer
Below average.
Our driveway was acid stained about 15 years ago and needs refreshing.
Will SuperSeal 30 work for me? Pictures as requested.
Thank you.
Yes, it would work for this.
Need company name of people who apply sealer…do the sealing
We do not have lists of contractors by area. Check online for local applicators.
hEy my driveway needs some help what is the best way to do it and what products should I USE it was midnight blue and glossy before
Sorry but you cannot fix this with a sealer as the stamped concrete surface as failed in many spots py pitting and spalling. You might need to redo the entire driveway. Best to contact a stamped concrete professional installer.
Existing stamped concrete patio approx. 5-6 years old. Previously sealed with Euclid Super Diamond Clear, existing sealer appears mostly worn off – no issues with previous finish. Will Superseal 30 or SB 600 work where Super Diamond Clear was used without having to strip any remnants of the old sealer?
Yes as long as the old coating has not turned white or yellow in color.
I live in Michigan so winter is a problem. I have used Super Seal 30 twice. It is easy to apply and looks great. However, a little snow or rain makes it very slippery. I am 78 and being very careful, I still fell on my tailbone which hurt for 2 months. This was after using the additive to make the surface rougher to prevent such a problem. I am afraid for guests who are unaware of the slippery conditions. What else can I do? Would switching to the Super Seal 25 be the answer?
No switching would not help. You could add more grip into another application to see if that helps.
Does either the Super Seal 30 or the Supreme Shield SB-600 contain an emulsifier? We are re-sealing a 20 year old installation and hoping not to have to strip old product. Thanks.
Both are solvents that can emulsify old solvent-based sealers but they cannot “fix” a bad sealer that has turned white or discolored.
Can you use a sprayer to apply super seal30 concrete sealer? If so, what sprayer should I purchase?
No, the SS30 is too thick to spray.
What nap on the roller should I use to apply the SS30?
1/2″ or 5/8″.
Hey there! We just put stamped colored concrete in around our pool and hate the color. Did not turn out as base and release color said. Is there a colored sealer out there that may help? It a very large area! We haven’t sealed it at all yet…….thought I’d ask before purchasing anything.
No there are not tinted sealers that will fix this. Does it look better when wet? If so just use a wet look sealer like this: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/supreme-shield-sb-600-wet-look-review/
I had a stamped concrete patio put in spring 2018. Everclear 350 sealer was applied by the contractor with a roller. Bubbles appeared in most joints and were popped, power washed, dried and more sealer was applied with a roller ‘ nice and thick’ according to the contractor. 1st year the sealer flaked off some areas. 2nd year alot worse and now some spider web type cracks where the sealer seemed to fail. I was told xylene to redistribute the think sealer but not only did it dull the finish it made more spider webs appear and some areas the… Read more »
You would have to strip this all off to fix this. Adding more will make it worse.
I have a 5 year old unsealed colored stamped patio, pool deck and coping that I am currently cleaning off the calcium and efflorescence and then I’m going to seal it. What’s the difference between gloss and wet look? Seem the same to me. Also what product is non slippery when wet and will hold up better to our very hard water when my wife waters her potted plants and we wash the deck down because with stamped you always have some puddles
Wet look is an enhancement while gloss is a shine. They are not the same. You can add grip into sealers like the SuperSEl 30: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/superseal30-paver-and-concrete-sealer-review-2/
Hey I have a back patio that has stamped concrete I bought the house new 4 years ago and don’t know what type of sealer the builder used if any. How do I decide if SB-600 or super seal 25 would be best. Is there a difference other than the semi gloss shine? Will the sb-600 be slick?
Either would be fine. The difference is the gloss level.
Have stamped concrete around my patio. 3 years old and contractor said wait last year for more sealer to wear off to prevent build up. Pretty faded now. First year we complained the deck was very hot and really slippery when wet. What do you recommend. And can you add supper grip to sb-600?
Super grip will work with SS30 or SS25 but not the SB-600.
Re: Supreme Shield SB-600. So there is NO stripping of this penetrating sealer, is that correct? You can reseal when it looks faded in two years – just power wash with water and re-seal. Is that correct? It is important for me to understand before proceeding – as I NEVER want to strip acrylic sealer again:-) Thank you for your time!
Yes, correct.
Hi
I have a stamped concrete patio which we plan to color and seal. This is a 12-year-old patio and has sections where the color has come off. We bought the house with the patio and not sure what was done on it. Please advise on how we can go about making it look beautiful.
I have the pictures attached
Thanks
Try any of the above sealers. Will work great.
Removing old sealer due to cloudiness – patio is 18 years old. It is a HORRIBLE job and still after second year of working on this and this weekend two applications of remover not all gone – much better though. In hind site should have done brick pavers. Anyway we are stuck! What SEALER? I’m reading about sealers – one recommendation is to use a penetrating sealer to avoid the “cloudy” build up with topical sealers. Then another article says, “use a topical sealant for stamped concrete due to the porous surface of stamped concrete and avoid cloudiness” Are there… Read more »
Try this: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/supreme-shield-sb-600-wet-look-review/
Yes, I see “penetrating, breathable, no high gloss or plastic look associated with other traditional film-forming sealers, not slippery, looks wet (not shiny) – ALL sounds perfect! My stamped concrete was sealed previously, with a topical acrylic sealer. I have stripped it – NOT perfect but darn close:-) Can I use the “Supreme Shield SB-600” sealer on this stripped, previously acrylic topically sealed stamped concrete? Also, can I antique it or is that necessary – when wet with water it looks good?I thought antique would get more color variation – right now it looks dull and pink (see above pic).… Read more »
Yes, you can use it. You cannot tint it. It will enhance like wet with water. Clean and redo every 2 years or so is normal.
How long after power washing my stamped concrete patio should I wait before sealing it? If it rains in between should I wait again as long?
48 hours after prep or rain.
Several questions. I live in WISCONSIN. Stamped patio with colorant is now about 4 years old. 1). What is best product to seal it with to bring back some deeper color (it is gray). 2). That is not too slippery when wet. 3). And best way to apply – roll? Broom? Or spray?
Thanks
Use this: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/supreme-shield-sb-600-wet-look-review/
Roll it on.
I have a new stamp sidewalk in Wis. and want the longest lasting product that is solvent base but yet don’t have that plastic super shinny look. Is the Wet look sealer, as hardy as gloss. Also do feel gloss wears better than any other sealants.
You would want a wet look with no gloss: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/supreme-shield-sb-600-wet-look-review/
Waited approx. 36 days for stamped concrete to dry.
Contractor, on 39th day, washed stamped concrete, and within
a hour sealed stamp concrete.
Two months later, growing white cloudy look, appearing all over, why??
It could be many things that is causing this but most likely trapped moisture due to the concrete being damp when he applied too soon. It depends on the brand of sealer though.
The days of sealing the same day of a wash are gone. There’s a reason why stamp is more expensive. Many return visits. I look for 48 hours of rain free weather. Wash , seal 24hrs later as long as there’s no rain in sight for 24 hrs after second coat. All this while making sure I’m sealing before sun up or sundown.
We just had a stamped concrete decking put in around our pool. We live in the Arizona desert-super hot summers. What sealer do you recommend?
Any of the above products that we list would work well. It really depends on the appearance that you want?
Just had our patio done with colored stamped concrete. Waited 5 weeks and then washed it and let it dry and then rolled areas with Behr Premium Wet-Look Sealer. Woke up next day to discover all areas done are white. Very upset! The colored stamped concrete was very expensive. What should I do? Will the white fade?
You will have to remove it and that will require stripping and pressure washing.
I see people are saying every two years for sealing . I was told every year. What is best? My stamped concrete is around a salt water pool and goes from shiny to very dull looking through the winter. We do buy a professional grade sealer and mix solvent in it.
Every two years is best.
I put in a stamped concrete driveway and pathway in 2018 in a brick red colour, The contractor applied a sealer and did not mix the additive in the sealer but threw it on the wet sealer using his hands. The result is an ugly discoloured red stamped concrete job which looks like dirt / sand is covering the concrete. It is so bad that I now hate my decision to do stamped concrete. Can I fix this?
I want to see the beautiful red colour yet want it as non-slippery as possible.
Margaret
Post some pictures.
What would be best for stamped concrete that gets very slippery in winter
Super Seal 30 and add some Super Grip into it.
I read that the MasonrySaver Decorative Concrete Sealer can be applied on top of an old water based sealer. Is this true? I have a 950 sq ft stamped concrete patio.
Yes, it can.
Our stamped concrete patio (4000 square feet) was made two years ago and the contractor used Dayton Superior J20 cure and seal. How is that sealer in your opinion. We need to reseal it now . Should I use the same sealer or you recommend super seal 25?
We have never used it or heard of it. The Super Seal 25 would be compatible with it.
3-4 years ago we put a heavy coat of Thompsons Seal on our front porch stamped concrete. Painstakingly power washed almost all of it off. The sections in the shade near the house are most intact with the previous coating. Do you think we need to actually strip it at this point? Most of it seems to be removed where the sun has been beating on it.
Which sealer for wet look do you suggest? Colorado severe weather winter/summer.
Try this sealer: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/supreme-shield-sb-600-wet-look-review/
It should be stripped for best results.
We live in the Denver area (Littleton, CO) and have sealed our 50′ x 25′ stamped concrete patio and a second 600 – 800 sf smaller stamped concrete patio and sidewalks about three times (every 2-3 years) in the last ten years, using US SPEC, BRS-25, HIGH GLOSS SOLVENT BASED SEALER/25% SOLIDS…WE BELIEVE A DIAMOND PRODUCT – also I applied using a roller(s). Yes, you should strip this: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/how-to-strip-a-paver-sealer/
Before using the Super Seal 30.
Shiniest is under porch and other is in the sunshine. Would these need to be stripped before applying new sealant? Which sealant would you recommend?
Looks like the outside area sealer turned white. That should be stripped. Use Super Seal 25 after.
Good Afternoon! Would it be possible for you to tell me if the spotty shiny places (not the sunshine and shade) indicate that they would or would not need to be stripped before new is added? I appreciate your input greatly!!
It appears that Super seal 25 & 30 are not allowed in Canada…just checked with opws whose link I got from your web page
1) Have areas which are going to be almost impossible to roll on: long curved low height retaining wall, steps with curved ends etc…
2) where can I buy these products in Canada?
Thanks
1. Some products can be sprayed.
2. Super Seal 25 is not allowed in Canada.
In in of your responses below you recommend Using the Super Seal 25 with the Super Grip anti-slip additive. For non slip surface. Is this to be mixed with the Sealer before application? If yes, what’s the best way?
Yes, mixed in.
Is it better to spray or Roll on?
Roll.
Thanks so much for the expeditious & most helpful responses ! What kind of roller do u suggest?
Out of curiosity what’s your opinion on the Behr (Home Depot) & Valspar (Lowe’s) products?
Behr and Valspar are poor products and have issues with turning white in color. Any 1/2 inch roller will work.
I had a stamped deck installed 2 years ago. They used Diamond Super clear 350 and had a lot of trouble with it blistering. They came back and stripped it and used the same brand with much of the same results. I am located in Springfield Ohio. What would you recommend?
Strip it off and try Masonry Save Decorative Concrete Sealer.
What is the best sealer for stamp concrete on my driveway, it comes with sidewalk that every winter the government putting some regular salt, every year need to put a sealer, i need something that gonna last for few years
Try Super Seal 30.
Hello, I just read you reviews of the sealants above. Only the last one stated Non yellowing . Are the previously mentioned non yellowing as well? Which would be the best sealer with a high shine for a stamped concrete walkway and drive. They is fading and pitting now. There is no sealer used as of yet. Two years old. Any help is appreciated. Sam
All are non-yellowing. Use the Super Seal 30 for a higher gloss.
We’re in Canada can I buy this . product
No idea.
Want to seal stamped concrete around Pool area that gets full sun all day. Would like the wet look but not shining in my face. Suggestions?
Try Supreme Shield SB-600.
Have you reviewed a product called Spec-Seal? I can get it in Sacramento but wondering if it’s as good as the Low VOC SuperSeal 25 you recommend for California.
Sorry but no, never heard of it.
can they all be used over other sealers without cleaning it all off
Depends on the sealer type that was used before and if it has discolored or not?
