What Sealer is Best for Stamped Concrete Patios
Stamped concrete is a decorative surface that has become popular in the last 10-20 years. These surfaces utilize patterns and different colors to create a dramatic look for your landscaping. Stamped concrete is patterned to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile, wood, and other patterns. It is commonly used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks.
As with any exterior concrete surface, stamped concrete surfaces must be maintained consistently. Sealing will help keep your Stamped Concrete looking new and protected for many years.
To determine what Stamped Concrete Sealer is best, you must first understand the differences between the different types of stamped concrete sealers and what you would like to achieve when it comes to appearance and protection when done.
Stamped Concrete Sealers have four primary functions
- Enhance the Stamped Concrete by adding a wet look, shine, or both.
- Protects the Stamped Concrete from pitting and cracking.
- Protect the Stamped Concrete from color loss and fading
- Seals from water damage and staining.
Wet Look Stamped Concrete Sealer?
“Wet look” sometimes gets confused with “gloss.” Using a sealer that leaves a “wet look” means darkening the surface as if wet with water. These sealers may or may not contain a shine level of some sort. Wet-look sealers will also protect from UV fading and color loss.
Gloss Stamped Concrete Sealers?
Gloss sealers, ranging from matte to high gloss, will shine to the surface. In most scenarios, you will also darken the concrete with a wet look. These sealers may be prone to being slippery when wet if over-applied.
Preventing Pitting/Cracking Stamped Concrete?
One reason to seal Stamped Concrete is to protect it from pitting and cracking. This is especially important for cold-weather areas where deicing salts are used, which can result in erosion of the surface by pitting, or the freeze/thaw cycle can create permanent cracks if the stamped concrete is not sealed.

š Buyerās Guide ā Choosing the Best Stamped Concrete Sealer
Stamped concrete is both decorative and functional, but it needs protection to maintain its beauty and durability. Choosing the right sealer depends on your finish preference, exposure conditions, and local VOC regulations.
ā 1. Gloss Level ā Wet Look or Matte?
Finish Type | Appearance | Recommended For | Examples |
---|---|---|---|
High Gloss | Rich color enhancement & shine | Patios, pool decks, decorative areas | SuperSeal 30 |
Semi-Gloss | Slight shine, moderate enhancement | Entryways, driveways | SuperSeal 25 |
Wet Look / No Gloss | Darkens surface with no film gloss | Natural aesthetic, less slipperiness | Supreme Shield SB-600 |
Satin/Low Gloss | Subtle enhancement | Residential areas with foot traffic | Super Seal-Matte |
š” Glossy finishes are more eye-catching but can become slippery when wet. For safety, consider non-slip additives.
ā 2. Solvent-Based vs. Water-Based Sealers
Feature | Solvent-Based Acrylics | Water-Based Acrylics |
---|---|---|
Color Enhancement | Strong | Mild to moderate |
Gloss | High | Matte to low gloss |
Recoat Compatibility | Easier | May require stripping |
VOC Compliance | Limited in some states | Typically compliant |
Durability | Very good | Moderate |
ā ļø Always check local VOC regulations before selecting a solvent-based product.
ā 3. Expected Longevity and Resealing Frequency
-
Acrylic Sealers (Solvent or Water-Based): Reseal every 2ā3 years
-
Penetrating Sealers: May last up to 5+ years depending on exposure
-
UV & Moisture Exposure: Accelerates wear; reseal more frequently for full sun areas
ā 4. Ease of Application
Stamped concrete sealers are generally DIY-friendly:
-
Use a pump sprayer or 1/2″ nap roller
-
Apply 2 thin coats for best results
-
Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and fully cured
š§¼ Remove any previous failed coatings or trapped moisture to avoid peeling.
ā 5. VOC Compliance by State
States with low-VOC laws (e.g., CA, NY, NJ, IL) may restrict certain high-solvent sealers like SuperSeal 30. Use low-VOC water-based or penetrating alternatives like:
-
MasonrySaver Stamped Concrete Sealer
-
Supreme Shield SB-600 (VOC-compliant in most regions)

ā Frequently Asked Questions ā Stamped Concrete Sealers
What is the best sealer for stamped concrete?
The best sealer for stamped concrete is typically a solvent-based acrylic that provides a wet look while offering UV, stain, and abrasion resistance. SuperSeal 30, Foundation Armor AR350, and Supreme Shield SB-600 are top-rated choices depending on your desired finish (gloss vs. satin) and location (VOC restrictions).
Whatās the difference between a wet look and natural finish sealer?
-
Wet look sealers enhance the color of stamped concrete and leave a glossy or semi-gloss film.
-
Natural finish sealers provide protection without significantly changing the appearance, resulting in a more matte or invisible finish.
š” Wet look sealers are more popular for decorative patios and pool decks, while natural finishes are often chosen for subtle enhancement.
How often should you reseal stamped concrete?
Stamped concrete should be resealed every 2 to 3 years depending on foot traffic, UV exposure, and weather conditions. High-gloss finishes may dull faster in direct sunlight and require more frequent reapplication.
Can stamped concrete sealer make the surface slippery?
Yes, film-forming sealersāespecially high-gloss onesācan become slippery when wet. To reduce slip hazards, use a non-slip additive or opt for a lower-gloss or penetrating sealer.
Can I apply stamped concrete sealer myself?
Yes. Most stamped concrete sealers can be applied with a sprayer or 1/2ā nap roller. Surface prep is crucialāmake sure the concrete is clean, dry, and free of previous failed coatings. Apply 2 thin coats for best results.

Ask below, and I will be glad to help!
We have a concrete patio next to a new garage that was poured in late May and it looked beautiful. Our builder continued to work on our project and garage until mid-August. There is a large pecan tree next to the patio. However, our builder never recommended that we place any type of a sealer on our new patio, even 30 days after it was poured. While we were out of town, a storm came through and blew pecans and debris all of it which left significant brown splotchy stains. We have had two professionals attempt to clean the stains… Read more Ā»
Bleach will remove the pecan stains. Use one part bleach to 4 parts water. apply, let it dwell for minutes, and then rinse well. FYI, sealers will not prevent future stains from the pecans, they would only help to prevent “deep” stains in the concrete.
What is a good sealer for vertical stamped concrete shower walls
What type of appearance are you looking for?
Iām 75. Beautiful stamped variegated brown tones with no shine left. No wear and tear. Just dull. Want the real wet look like when it rains. What do you recommend and can I roll it on. Thank you.
Look at the SuperSeal 25 sealer:

I want a high gloss/wet look. Semi-gloss doesnāt sound right.
Use Super Seal 30 for a higher gloss.
Previous owners of my home installed a beautiful paver patio and walkway that has become somewhat of an eye sore and hazard over the years. The roots of the big maple tree in the center of the patio causing it to heave and are a hazard for walking. Consequently, we are having the tree removed and the patio/walkway replaced with concrete. I want my new patio to last and look nice but I’m struggling with whether or not sealing it in future years is really necessary. I just had new decorative brick borders built around my garden beds. I believe the manufacturer is Lorado. The bricks are chalky-looking. Iād like to have them darkened, made less porous and have more of a wet look finish.
Is there such a product and process for achieving the look I want?
Hi– I have a stamped concrete surface that surrounds my pool. There are a few fine line cracks. Please suggest a sealer that both deepens the color and provides a wet look, but is not slippery, especially when wet. Thanks.
Try Supreme Shield SB-600.
We had a stamped concrete patio installed 6 years ago it looks faded when dry but when it is wet it looks nice I was wondering what I need to do to make it look like that all of the time thanks.
You would want a wet-look sealer. Look at Supreme Shield SB-600.
We have a newly stamped with color concrete deck that needs to be sealed – must be in a matte (no sheen) finish due to 1) passive solar house / deck gets lots of sun; and 2) visual handicap/ super light sensitive owners. What product do you recommend?
Try the Supreme Shield SB-600.
Hi, you had suggested that I try Xylene again. This time I kept it wet for 5-10 minutes and then rolled. The scaly/crystallized look is still there. You can see in the magnified second picture I have included. It has been two years now I have not sealed and just tried Xylene.
You probably will need to strip to fix it. See here:
https://www.concretesealerreview.com/how-to-strip-a-stamped-concrete-sealer/
Ok I used Clemons Stripper and did two sections of walkway. Both sections where done five times. After the fifth time the one section just had some white spots that I couldn’t powerwash off. So I thought one more strip and it should be good. I was wrong, after drying I now have more sealer on there. Don’t know if some old sealer was picked up in roller and then reapplied itself??? Anyhow can I spray sealer over this? I’m sure below these patches of sealer the concrete was not dry. I’m running low on stripper ….. Thanks
Spray it with water and send some pics while wet.
Ok here it is wet. Thanks again for your time, I do appreciate it. I am sending two different sets of pictures.
It looks pretty good when wet with water. When you reseal with a wet look sealer, it will look like these pics. The prior pics that still has a haze, that may be stripper cleaner residue, not old sealer. You can cleaner that off with a Cleaner Degreaser. Clemons makes one.
No I was referring to the dark patches that appeared after the last strip. Very noticeable under message heading. ” OK I used Clemons stripper.” Look at 2nd pic. The dull overall look is stripped. The dark patches are sealer, you feel the plastic like layer on top of the dark spots. Wet it looks fine. My question is can I seal this now? Worried that under those dark spots concrete was wet.
If it all blends in when wet with water, then you should be good to apply a wet look sealer.
Where can I find a sealant for stamps concrete
Search online for the suggested sealers in the article.
How much pressure do I need to use when I pressure-wash the porch before applying the sealant?
2000-3000 psi.
Thank you so much for your fast reply.
Can you give me your opinion of Ever Clear sealant, Butterfield, and V-seal? These were recommended.
Ever Clear is the same as Diamond Clear. We are not fans. Never heard of Butterfield. V-Seal is decent but we like the Super Seal better.
What product would you recommend to seal a stamped concrete deck around a salt water pool?
Super Seal 25 or the Super Seal 30.
The sealers are great but can be slippery. What do you recommend for a grit additive that wonāt take away from the aesthetics of the concrete?
That would vary based on the sealer brand and type used as not all can be used with a grit additive.
I have 2 quotes to clean and seal a stamped concrete patio that is 11 yrs old. Itās been sealed every other year. One quote is for Chem Masters traz 25A, the other is for Deco Crete sealer to which he adds Deco Crete anti slip. Which is the better product?
Sorry but never heard of either one. We would only sugest the ones in our article.
I just had a small stamped concrete patio poured. Would it be difficult to seal it myself? Itās only about 6ā by 12ā. What would be the best product to use? I just want a natural look.
Easy to do. Try Supreme Shield SB-600. One gallon.
I have stamped concrete around a pool. What to use that is not slippery when wet
Try Super Seal Matte. You can also add their Super Grip into it for traction.
How often should I reseal my stamped concrete? Thank you
Every 2-3 years or as needed.
Since I was asking thought you might know something about this. Five years ago had this concrete drive poured. Later that day they came back and sprayed sealer on it. Problem was the sprayers they were using were spiting and not spraying. Anyhow this is pictures from 2018 and now. Slowly getting better with time. Any suggestions?
They used a cure and seal for concrete and did a poor job applying. It is not used going forward. You cannot apply more of it on top.
So there is nothing I can do? Hate to park cars on it cause I know it’s not sealed correctly etc. I thought giving it five or so years I might be able to put something on it that would seal and make look better…
Nothing we know of, sorry.
Hi Scott My decorative stamped concrete closest to the road looks dull. I seal with Butterfield clear guard Pro 350 almost yearly. Last year I did not seal had some cracking and crystallizing so I was told to just Xylene it and not coat it. What do you suggest now?
You could try the Xylene again.
Scott this picture may be better to see the fish scale type crystallizing I was referring to.
I have an 80 year old building with glue residue on concrete floors from the tile they put down years ago. I would like to restore the building and seal the concrete but canāt get the residue up. Could I seal over it? Which sealant would be best to use?
No, you cannot seal over it. Grinding it off is the best way.
Is it better to cut it in and spray or roll it?
Which product are you asking about?
I have had solvent base sealers applied a couple times professionally. The last time it seemed to turn white and flake off. What prep do I need to do to apply super seal 30 over current products?
You will need to fully remove it first: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/how-to-strip-a-paver-sealer/
Supreme Shield SB-600 is this product slippery when wet?
It is not a filming coating so it should ne be slippery when wet.
Salt damage on my stamped driveway, only five years old and also faded! How and where do I start to put a durable gloss that will last?
Post some pics of the issues in the comments for help to fix.
I have an old cracked driveway with some uneven joints. Trying to find a reasonably priced expert in west Los Angeles.
Thanks,
Mike
Sorry, but we have no idea about concrete contractors.
Hi my stamped patio is a little over a year old. I have loads of white spots on it. Will resealing it with Super seal 30 get rid of the spots?
Thanks
Maybe but it will probably come back as your old sealer has issues with turning white. You may need to strip it.
I have a stamped concrete patio which is approximately 15years old. After years of power washing the dye and sealer is almost gone in all areas, but there are a few rectangles where there is a touch of sealer left. We do not know what type of sealer was used. This week we power washed it again, then applied a Behr semi transparent stain to put some color back into the concrete. So now we have a porous stamped concrete patio with a recent stain application (about a week old). What type of sealer would be best for our requirements:… Read more Ā»
You need an acrylic sealer since you stained this. Try Masonry Saver Stamped concrete sealer or Super Seal Matte.
Help appreciated!
Stamped concrete was poured Saturday morning, sealant applied Sunday afternoon.
Rain happened on Monday. We stayed off of it until Thursday.
Contractor says to give it a month, but I donāt think time will fix these issues. The sealant is āgummyā in some sections, bubbling in the crevices, and there is discoloration and claw marks from our dogs despite waiting 4 days to go on it. (We were told we could use it 24 hours after the sealant was applied but waited longer anyways).
How can this be fixed?
Try to reset the sealer with Xylene solvent. Spray on and let dry. Make sure it has 2-3 days to dry before rain.
I need a sealer that is not slippery
for my pool deck

I have a large stamped and colored concrete patio that has been neglected for several years. There is fading and pitting in some areas. What should I do to prep and seal this patio? What products should I use? Is this a job I can do myself or should I hire a professional?
Clean to remove dirt and then seal with Super Seal 25. You cannot fix the pitting.
