What Sealer is Best for Stamped Concrete Patios

Stamped concrete is a decorative surface that has become popular in the last 10-20 years. These surfaces utilize patterns and different colors to create a dramatic look for your landscaping. Stamped concrete is patterned to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile, wood, and other patterns. It is commonly used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks.

Before and After Stamped Concrete Sealing

As with any exterior concrete surface, stamped concrete surfaces must be maintained consistently. Sealing will help keep your Stamped Concrete looking new and protected for many years.

To determine what Stamped Concrete Sealer is best, you must first understand the differences between the different types of stamped concrete sealers and what you would like to achieve when it comes to appearance and protection when done.

Stamped Concrete Sealers have four primary functions

  • Enhance the Stamped Concrete by adding a wet look, shine, or both.
  • Protects the Stamped Concrete from pitting and cracking.
  • Protect the Stamped Concrete from color loss and fading
  • Seals from water damage and staining.

Wet Look Stamped Concrete Sealer?

“Wet look” sometimes gets confused with “gloss.” Using a sealer that leaves a “wet look” means darkening the surface as if wet with water. These sealers may or may not contain a shine level of some sort. Wet-look sealers will also protect from UV fading and color loss.

Gloss Stamped Concrete Sealers?

Gloss sealers, ranging from matte to high gloss, will shine to the surface. In most scenarios, you will also darken the concrete with a wet look. These sealers may be prone to being slippery when wet if over-applied.

Preventing Pitting/Cracking Stamped Concrete?

One reason to seal Stamped Concrete is to protect it from pitting and cracking. This is especially important for cold-weather areas where deicing salts are used, which can result in erosion of the surface by pitting, or the freeze/thaw cycle can create permanent cracks if the stamped concrete is not sealed.

šŸ›’ Buyer’s Guide – Choosing the Best Stamped Concrete Sealer

Stamped concrete is both decorative and functional, but it needs protection to maintain its beauty and durability. Choosing the right sealer depends on your finish preference, exposure conditions, and local VOC regulations.

āœ… 1. Gloss Level – Wet Look or Matte?

Finish Type Appearance Recommended For Examples
High Gloss Rich color enhancement & shine Patios, pool decks, decorative areas SuperSeal 30
Semi-Gloss Slight shine, moderate enhancement Entryways, driveways SuperSeal 25
Wet Look / No Gloss Darkens surface with no film gloss Natural aesthetic, less slipperiness Supreme Shield SB-600
Satin/Low Gloss Subtle enhancement Residential areas with foot traffic Super Seal-Matte

šŸ’” Glossy finishes are more eye-catching but can become slippery when wet. For safety, consider non-slip additives.

āœ… 2. Solvent-Based vs. Water-Based Sealers

Feature Solvent-Based Acrylics Water-Based Acrylics
Color Enhancement Strong Mild to moderate
Gloss High Matte to low gloss
Recoat Compatibility Easier May require stripping
VOC Compliance Limited in some states Typically compliant
Durability Very good Moderate

āš ļø Always check local VOC regulations before selecting a solvent-based product.

āœ… 3. Expected Longevity and Resealing Frequency

  • Acrylic Sealers (Solvent or Water-Based): Reseal every 2–3 years

  • Penetrating Sealers: May last up to 5+ years depending on exposure

  • UV & Moisture Exposure: Accelerates wear; reseal more frequently for full sun areas

āœ… 4. Ease of Application

Stamped concrete sealers are generally DIY-friendly:

  • Use a pump sprayer or 1/2″ nap roller

  • Apply 2 thin coats for best results

  • Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and fully cured

🧼 Remove any previous failed coatings or trapped moisture to avoid peeling.

āœ… 5. VOC Compliance by State

States with low-VOC laws (e.g., CA, NY, NJ, IL) may restrict certain high-solvent sealers like SuperSeal 30. Use low-VOC water-based or penetrating alternatives like:

  • MasonrySaver Stamped Concrete Sealer

  • Supreme Shield SB-600 (VOC-compliant in most regions)

ā“ Frequently Asked Questions – Stamped Concrete Sealers

What is the best sealer for stamped concrete?

The best sealer for stamped concrete is typically a solvent-based acrylic that provides a wet look while offering UV, stain, and abrasion resistance. SuperSeal 30, Foundation Armor AR350, and Supreme Shield SB-600 are top-rated choices depending on your desired finish (gloss vs. satin) and location (VOC restrictions).

What’s the difference between a wet look and natural finish sealer?

  • Wet look sealers enhance the color of stamped concrete and leave a glossy or semi-gloss film.

  • Natural finish sealers provide protection without significantly changing the appearance, resulting in a more matte or invisible finish.

šŸ’” Wet look sealers are more popular for decorative patios and pool decks, while natural finishes are often chosen for subtle enhancement.

How often should you reseal stamped concrete?

Stamped concrete should be resealed every 2 to 3 years depending on foot traffic, UV exposure, and weather conditions. High-gloss finishes may dull faster in direct sunlight and require more frequent reapplication.

Can stamped concrete sealer make the surface slippery?

Yes, film-forming sealers—especially high-gloss ones—can become slippery when wet. To reduce slip hazards, use a non-slip additive or opt for a lower-gloss or penetrating sealer.

Can I apply stamped concrete sealer myself?

Yes. Most stamped concrete sealers can be applied with a sprayer or 1/2ā€ nap roller. Surface prep is crucial—make sure the concrete is clean, dry, and free of previous failed coatings. Apply 2 thin coats for best results.

How good of a product is super seal 25? I am looking for a commercial grade not Home Depot. I had a stamped patio installed and they used a solvent based acrylic sealer supposedly they said it was super diamond blade. It scratches real easy and flaked off. Is super seal 25 uv protectant? Is it scratch or flake resistant?

I live in Buffalo,NY……lots of snow and ice and I must use a lot of deicer. My stamped concrete was last sealed 2 years ago with super diamond clear. Although when freshly sealed it looks great, it is very slippery when wet and has become hazy. Do you have a suggestion for a compatible sealer and anti skid? We do like the wet look, but would sacrifice some of it for a safer surface. Thanks,

Add "Shark Grip" product to your sealer next time you want to recoat, mix in the sealer with a drill/mixer follow directions, and roll on. Product becomes almost invisible but still the traction, some cast product onto wet sealer, I don't advise it, you can end up with to much in certain areas. Concrete Finisher of over 30 years.

Hi there,
We have stamped patterned concrete around the pool – we have sealed last year.
This spring we have noticed a lot of white spots – not really chips but spots that are white and look like the color and sealer might have come right off. Can we add some of the powdered color to sealer and apply over these areas? The rest of the comcrete is still colored although very faded so sealing the whole thing with the powdered color would be great – can this be done and what do you recommend?

We have a large stamped (Grey) concrete area around our pool and summer kitchen. We have been in the house for 15 years and the color looks dull and worn from the constant Sun exposure (we live in Florida). I am told that resealing will reinvigorate the color and seal at the the same time? What process should I employ for preparation before sealing? Which sealer product do need? How many coats. Also, I do not want it to be slippery as it is near the pool.
Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

I have been tasked by my church to seal a baptismal font. This font had been previously located inside the church …… it is now located outside (south Georgia). It has a pinkish/tannish color to it and appears to be made from concrete. As it is outside, I think it needs to be sealed. I would appreciate any direction on a choice of sealant (brand) as well as direction on the preparation of the surface prior to sealing. Should the sealing be done annually? The finish preferred would be matte or flat. Thanks for your help in advance

I would like to point out that the Super Seal lid is very difficult to open. There is a plastic tab which i pulled off. There wasn't a typical screw lid which one would expect when buying something this expensive. I don't want to pry open the entire can when i'm still testing it out. I've never encountered such an unusual lid opening. Based on this alone, I would not recommend this product. Go find one that has a screw off, metal lid and you will be much more satisfied.

Hello, I have a question on a colored, stamped concrete pool deck. The concrete is about 2yrs. old. I resealed the concrete with superseal 25 w/sure grip additive in May of 2013. The wet look was AWESOME when I was done. I put it on relatively thick 1/2" nap roller. Now the concrete looks faded, almost as bad as before sealing it. My pool water is salt water, (not sure if that makes a difference). That happen to our stamped concrete patio. I hate to tell you this but it is moisture that is being trapped between the concrete and the sealer.
