What Sealer is Best for Stamped Concrete Patios

Stamped concrete is a decorative surface that has become popular in the last 10-20 years. These surfaces utilize patterns and different colors to create a dramatic look for your landscaping. Stamped concrete is patterned to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile, wood, and other patterns. It is commonly used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks.

Before and After Stamped Concrete Sealing

As with any exterior concrete surface, stamped concrete surfaces must be maintained consistently. Sealing will help keep your Stamped Concrete looking new and protected for many years.

To determine what Stamped Concrete Sealer is best, you must first understand the differences between the different types of stamped concrete sealers and what you would like to achieve when it comes to appearance and protection when done.

Stamped Concrete Sealers have four primary functions

  • Enhance the Stamped Concrete by adding a wet look, shine, or both.
  • Protects the Stamped Concrete from pitting and cracking.
  • Protect the Stamped Concrete from color loss and fading
  • Seals from water damage and staining.

Wet Look Stamped Concrete Sealer?

“Wet look” sometimes gets confused with “gloss.” Using a sealer that leaves a “wet look” means darkening the surface as if wet with water. These sealers may or may not contain a shine level of some sort. Wet-look sealers will also protect from UV fading and color loss.

Gloss Stamped Concrete Sealers?

Gloss sealers, ranging from matte to high gloss, will shine to the surface. In most scenarios, you will also darken the concrete with a wet look. These sealers may be prone to being slippery when wet if over-applied.

Preventing Pitting/Cracking Stamped Concrete?

One reason to seal Stamped Concrete is to protect it from pitting and cracking. This is especially important for cold-weather areas where deicing salts are used, which can result in erosion of the surface by pitting, or the freeze/thaw cycle can create permanent cracks if the stamped concrete is not sealed.

🛒 Buyer’s Guide – Choosing the Best Stamped Concrete Sealer

Stamped concrete is both decorative and functional, but it needs protection to maintain its beauty and durability. Choosing the right sealer depends on your finish preference, exposure conditions, and local VOC regulations.

✅ 1. Gloss Level – Wet Look or Matte?

Finish Type Appearance Recommended For Examples
High Gloss Rich color enhancement & shine Patios, pool decks, decorative areas SuperSeal 30
Semi-Gloss Slight shine, moderate enhancement Entryways, driveways SuperSeal 25
Wet Look / No Gloss Darkens surface with no film gloss Natural aesthetic, less slipperiness Supreme Shield SB-600
Satin/Low Gloss Subtle enhancement Residential areas with foot traffic Super Seal-Matte

💡 Glossy finishes are more eye-catching but can become slippery when wet. For safety, consider non-slip additives.

✅ 2. Solvent-Based vs. Water-Based Sealers

Feature Solvent-Based Acrylics Water-Based Acrylics
Color Enhancement Strong Mild to moderate
Gloss High Matte to low gloss
Recoat Compatibility Easier May require stripping
VOC Compliance Limited in some states Typically compliant
Durability Very good Moderate

⚠️ Always check local VOC regulations before selecting a solvent-based product.

✅ 3. Expected Longevity and Resealing Frequency

  • Acrylic Sealers (Solvent or Water-Based): Reseal every 2–3 years

  • Penetrating Sealers: May last up to 5+ years depending on exposure

  • UV & Moisture Exposure: Accelerates wear; reseal more frequently for full sun areas

✅ 4. Ease of Application

Stamped concrete sealers are generally DIY-friendly:

  • Use a pump sprayer or 1/2″ nap roller

  • Apply 2 thin coats for best results

  • Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and fully cured

🧼 Remove any previous failed coatings or trapped moisture to avoid peeling.

✅ 5. VOC Compliance by State

States with low-VOC laws (e.g., CA, NY, NJ, IL) may restrict certain high-solvent sealers like SuperSeal 30. Use low-VOC water-based or penetrating alternatives like:

  • MasonrySaver Stamped Concrete Sealer

  • Supreme Shield SB-600 (VOC-compliant in most regions)

❓ Frequently Asked Questions – Stamped Concrete Sealers

What is the best sealer for stamped concrete?

The best sealer for stamped concrete is typically a solvent-based acrylic that provides a wet look while offering UV, stain, and abrasion resistance. SuperSeal 30, Foundation Armor AR350, and Supreme Shield SB-600 are top-rated choices depending on your desired finish (gloss vs. satin) and location (VOC restrictions).

What’s the difference between a wet look and natural finish sealer?

  • Wet look sealers enhance the color of stamped concrete and leave a glossy or semi-gloss film.

  • Natural finish sealers provide protection without significantly changing the appearance, resulting in a more matte or invisible finish.

💡 Wet look sealers are more popular for decorative patios and pool decks, while natural finishes are often chosen for subtle enhancement.

How often should you reseal stamped concrete?

Stamped concrete should be resealed every 2 to 3 years depending on foot traffic, UV exposure, and weather conditions. High-gloss finishes may dull faster in direct sunlight and require more frequent reapplication.

Can stamped concrete sealer make the surface slippery?

Yes, film-forming sealers—especially high-gloss ones—can become slippery when wet. To reduce slip hazards, use a non-slip additive or opt for a lower-gloss or penetrating sealer.

Can I apply stamped concrete sealer myself?

Yes. Most stamped concrete sealers can be applied with a sprayer or 1/2” nap roller. Surface prep is crucial—make sure the concrete is clean, dry, and free of previous failed coatings. Apply 2 thin coats for best results.

We want to reseal our stamped concrete walkway and patio. Do we have to use the same product that was initially used on our concrete? I believe I was told it was Crystal Clear. It’s been about two years since it was done.

Hi, we are building a house and the flooring will be concrete. What is the best sealer for the floor? I am looking at Super Seal 30. Will I need to add a grip product to keep it from being too slick?

We just poured concrete for our patio/pool area. We added a darker gray to the mix and a light powder was added to the concrete when poured then stamped. The concrete is less then a week old and it looks white (from the power). The powder does still come up when watered down and brushed. What can we seal the concrete with that will make it look darker (like when wet) and not be slippery around the pool? Will it darken as it cures and the powder rinses away? How long do we wait to seal?
Thanks

Have a stamped concrete pool surround of about 700sf that was sealed when installed 4 years ago wth something that made it very slippery. We’re in Minnesota and are going to seal it and add an nonslip additive. If we use SS30 would we have to do one coat first then add the additive to the second coat? Is there an alternative to doing 2 coats but with as good a sealer? Patio looks great but need to make it not slippery. Thanks!

Thank you! We will be sealing driveway and north-facing patio pavers that have never been sealed, also. Is there any reason we shouldn’t use SB-600 for the pavers and the pool stamped concrete surround? If we don’t care about having a gloss finish on the pool surround, is the SS30 or the SB-600 better for there? Can the anti-slip be added to the 600? Thanks so much for all your help!

Also anything you recommend for the crack repair? Note two picture were taken in the sun and the one with the crack is in the shade. Thank you!

I have 3 year old colored and stamped concrete around our saltwater pool. The stamping was not done well at all, ie there are indentions from knee pads etc. but it is what I am stuck with. It always looks like there are “dry” spots on it as if the sealer was not applied in the low areas…especially after it dries a bit after it rains. After 3 years, I was told we should reapply sealer so here we are. Questions: 1- whats the absolute best sealer to use around saltwater pool. Greetings! I am SO impressed with your website and responsive comments section! I have a ten year old stamped concrete patio in the Seattle area which was poured in two contrasting red colors and textures. In addition to the original seal coat done by the contractor, I have twice sealed with W.R.Mead CD-309-.30 30% solid Acrylic with great results both times. However, it has been over five years since the last seal coat (tsk. tsk!), and the patio looks as in the pictures. I desire to restore the rich original look with what I hope are improved longer lasting products… Read more »

We had a decorative concrete patio put in 10 years ago and never could get it to look new after the first couple of years. I sealed it myself in the beginning and recently had the contractor seal it but not happy. The patio looks faded and you can see where furniture protects it from the sun that the color is ok. Heavy direct sun during the summer months. The contractor wants to strip the old sealer and seal with a different type of sealer. I am guessing he is going to go with a solvent based instead of water… Read more »

We bought a house with stamped cement sidewalk front and back and a large screened in patio. The sidewalk was put in about 9 yrs ago and I don't think it was ever resealed. It is a reddish color, looks faded and a whitish haze in places. I was wondering if it needs stripped before I reseal it. Also what would be the best sealant as I have no knowledge of what was used previously. I have pictures, but can't post them in this section.

Did your project get wet 1/2 days after the Sealer was applied? Solvent based sealers can't have any moisture applied within the first day or so. White spots will appear , especially around or near control joints.
