What Sealer is Best for Stamped Concrete Patios
Stamped concrete is a decorative surface that has become popular in the last 10-20 years. These surfaces utilize patterns and different colors to create a dramatic look for your landscaping. Stamped concrete is patterned to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile, wood, and other patterns. It is commonly used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks.
As with any exterior concrete surface, stamped concrete surfaces must be maintained consistently. Sealing will help keep your Stamped Concrete looking new and protected for many years.
To determine what Stamped Concrete Sealer is best, you must first understand the differences between the different types of stamped concrete sealers and what you would like to achieve when it comes to appearance and protection when done.
Stamped Concrete Sealers have four primary functions
- Enhance the Stamped Concrete by adding a wet look, shine, or both.
- Protects the Stamped Concrete from pitting and cracking.
- Protect the Stamped Concrete from color loss and fading
- Seals from water damage and staining.
Wet Look Stamped Concrete Sealer?
“Wet look” sometimes gets confused with “gloss.” Using a sealer that leaves a “wet look” means darkening the surface as if wet with water. These sealers may or may not contain a shine level of some sort. Wet-look sealers will also protect from UV fading and color loss.
Gloss Stamped Concrete Sealers?
Gloss sealers, ranging from matte to high gloss, will shine to the surface. In most scenarios, you will also darken the concrete with a wet look. These sealers may be prone to being slippery when wet if over-applied.
Preventing Pitting/Cracking Stamped Concrete?
One reason to seal Stamped Concrete is to protect it from pitting and cracking. This is especially important for cold-weather areas where deicing salts are used, which can result in erosion of the surface by pitting, or the freeze/thaw cycle can create permanent cracks if the stamped concrete is not sealed.

🛒 Buyer’s Guide – Choosing the Best Stamped Concrete Sealer
Stamped concrete is both decorative and functional, but it needs protection to maintain its beauty and durability. Choosing the right sealer depends on your finish preference, exposure conditions, and local VOC regulations.
✅ 1. Gloss Level – Wet Look or Matte?
Finish Type | Appearance | Recommended For | Examples |
---|---|---|---|
High Gloss | Rich color enhancement & shine | Patios, pool decks, decorative areas | SuperSeal 30 |
Semi-Gloss | Slight shine, moderate enhancement | Entryways, driveways | SuperSeal 25 |
Wet Look / No Gloss | Darkens surface with no film gloss | Natural aesthetic, less slipperiness | Supreme Shield SB-600 |
Satin/Low Gloss | Subtle enhancement | Residential areas with foot traffic | Super Seal-Matte |
💡 Glossy finishes are more eye-catching but can become slippery when wet. For safety, consider non-slip additives.
✅ 2. Solvent-Based vs. Water-Based Sealers
Feature | Solvent-Based Acrylics | Water-Based Acrylics |
---|---|---|
Color Enhancement | Strong | Mild to moderate |
Gloss | High | Matte to low gloss |
Recoat Compatibility | Easier | May require stripping |
VOC Compliance | Limited in some states | Typically compliant |
Durability | Very good | Moderate |
⚠️ Always check local VOC regulations before selecting a solvent-based product.
✅ 3. Expected Longevity and Resealing Frequency
-
Acrylic Sealers (Solvent or Water-Based): Reseal every 2–3 years
-
Penetrating Sealers: May last up to 5+ years depending on exposure
-
UV & Moisture Exposure: Accelerates wear; reseal more frequently for full sun areas
✅ 4. Ease of Application
Stamped concrete sealers are generally DIY-friendly:
-
Use a pump sprayer or 1/2″ nap roller
-
Apply 2 thin coats for best results
-
Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and fully cured
🧼 Remove any previous failed coatings or trapped moisture to avoid peeling.
✅ 5. VOC Compliance by State
States with low-VOC laws (e.g., CA, NY, NJ, IL) may restrict certain high-solvent sealers like SuperSeal 30. Use low-VOC water-based or penetrating alternatives like:
-
MasonrySaver Stamped Concrete Sealer
-
Supreme Shield SB-600 (VOC-compliant in most regions)

❓ Frequently Asked Questions – Stamped Concrete Sealers
What is the best sealer for stamped concrete?
The best sealer for stamped concrete is typically a solvent-based acrylic that provides a wet look while offering UV, stain, and abrasion resistance. SuperSeal 30, Foundation Armor AR350, and Supreme Shield SB-600 are top-rated choices depending on your desired finish (gloss vs. satin) and location (VOC restrictions).
What’s the difference between a wet look and natural finish sealer?
-
Wet look sealers enhance the color of stamped concrete and leave a glossy or semi-gloss film.
-
Natural finish sealers provide protection without significantly changing the appearance, resulting in a more matte or invisible finish.
💡 Wet look sealers are more popular for decorative patios and pool decks, while natural finishes are often chosen for subtle enhancement.
How often should you reseal stamped concrete?
Stamped concrete should be resealed every 2 to 3 years depending on foot traffic, UV exposure, and weather conditions. High-gloss finishes may dull faster in direct sunlight and require more frequent reapplication.
Can stamped concrete sealer make the surface slippery?
Yes, film-forming sealers—especially high-gloss ones—can become slippery when wet. To reduce slip hazards, use a non-slip additive or opt for a lower-gloss or penetrating sealer.
Can I apply stamped concrete sealer myself?
Yes. Most stamped concrete sealers can be applied with a sprayer or 1/2” nap roller. Surface prep is crucial—make sure the concrete is clean, dry, and free of previous failed coatings. Apply 2 thin coats for best results.
Questions on The Best Stamped Concrete Sealer?
Ask below, and I will be glad to help!
my 16 x 16 stampe patio is 2 years old and the contractor said I should seal every 2 years (please see attached photos). Here are some questions I have:
1) what sealer is the best for my patio? I do not know what was used originally
2) besides power washing, is there any other prepwork I need?
3) how much sealer do I need? If I purchase double the quantity, will it last for 2 years?
thanks…Mark
1. Super Seal 30 Concrete Sealer.
2. Just a pressure wash is good.
3. 3 gallons. More coats will not last longer.
I’m sorry let me refrase #3, if I purchase a 5 gal pail, can I save the remainder and use 2 years later
btw, thanks for your reply
Shelf life when opened is about 12 months so no guarantee it will last 2 years.
What’s the best sealer for 7 year old stamped concrete saltwater pool deck and do I have to strip before resealing?
Any of the above will work. As for prep, post a picture of the current condition.
Please tell me the best anti-slip sealer, preferably semi gloss, for stamped concrete. Thank you!
Use the Super Seal 25 with the Super Grip anti-slip additive.
Where can I get this
Check online or with the manufacturer.
Where can the Super Sealer be bought? I would like to buy some.
Thank you,
Kathy
Our stamped concrete is about 14 years old. It has lost its sheen and looks dull. Can you suggest a product to bring some life back and make it look presentable again. Thanks for your help.
Try Super Seal 30.
I had a porch and walk done 2 years ago in stamped concrete the porch is fine but the walk way is pitting. I was going to clean up the walk way and reseal it to stop the bleeding any other ideas ? Please don’t say pour new!
Try sealing with Super Sal 25. Hopefully, that will slow or stop the pitting.
We have a stamped concrete patio that is 6 years old, we have resealed it every other year. It looks great when we pressure wash it but it dries and looks dirty. What do we need to do to clean it and reseal it?
I am assuming I will have to strip the patio and then reseal. We live in Minnesota, where can I purchase the products needed?
Post a picture.
The first picture is with water put on it before it dries, the later ones are pictures of the patio after we have pressure washed it twice with a decreasing cleaner and it has dried.
Use a concrete sealer stripper by Clemons Concrete Coatings and heavy pressure washing to remove. Reseal with Super Seal 30 after.
Here are the pictures..
The last picture of the patio when it is wet…the other pictures are after it had dried.
We already replied to you.
Our patio is three years old. Was sealed with Euclid Diamond Coat with the curing agent in it.? Looked good but dull in some spots. Said they applied two coats but looks like one to me. No hazing but want to even out the overall sheen and appearance. I’m in Canada and we go through some harsh winters. I’ve been told that the products sold in the U.S. are much better. Plan on giving it a good cleaning and applying a fresh coat but not sure what to use. 1500sqft and would like to get a darkened semi gloss look,… Read more »
Sorry, but we have not idea as to what is available to you in Canada.
Last year I did a lot of research before choosing a sealant for stamped concrete around our pool deck. After reading all these reviews, we decided to use the SuperSeal 30 Gloss with SuperGrip. I am sad to say that there was barely any gloss when it dried. Also, over the next couple days, there were a lot of spots that looks like it is pitting. Totally disappointed it the product, especially after paying $184 for it.
Looks like you under applied the sealer in the first picture. What is your patio sq footage of the patio? The white spots you are seeing in the other pictures are not from the sealer but something underneath that is causing this discoloration. Could be trapped moisture, previous sealer, etc.
The sealer was applied in exactly the same amount on the entire patio with a roller. Most of the areas don’t even look like anything was applied at all. Not sure how anything can be under the sealer. It was last sealed 5 years ago and power washed the day before application.
Yes, but it was still under applied as you can tell by the way it dried. That is not the sealers fault.
We live in Ontario and get our pool area done everyyear and it only looks good for one month not kidding. I think I am going to do it this year what product should I use. It has white patches everywhere and I would like to use a none slip product
Post a picture.
How do you rate Lambert UV Sealant for stamped concrete? Does it compare with any of the above?
Never heard or used it.
I have a stamped concrete around an inground swimming pool. It seems to be fading and I am trying to find the best sealer for it.
Try Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer.
We have a stamped concrete front walkway and large back patio that were installed 13 years ago. The company did not mix tint in with the concrete. It started to flake off 2 years after installation, and the installer did not return our calls. 5 years after installation we paid a lot of money to get someone to strip all the color off (originally blue/gray flagstone with red brick on the side) and paint/tint it gray in center with black on edges. It looked nice for two years. We have not sealed it since then – 8 years ago. The… Read more »
Try Slate Gary Tint into the Super Seal 25 paver sealer.
Thanks – so no need to use the stripper?
What do you have for stamped asphalt
Nothing that we know of. Concrete sealers will not work on asphalt.
After each winter I remade the sealer of my patio and there are pitting.
what should I do to stop the deterioration and not to repeat every year?
every year I clean with karcher and the next day I apply super seal 30 to the paint roller.
I live in Quebec.
Your issue is structural and cannot be fixed by adding a sealer. No way to fix the fact that your concrete is deteriorating internally, causing the pitting.
I have a stamped concrete surface as my pool decking. It fades and the sealer wears away quickly and I have to have it restained and resealed annually (actually needs it more often). Do you have any recommendations? The contractor uses Solvent Seal 18/CE 22 from Chemsystems. There is also a sticker with U19 A001-Q0424. They use Gro_LAC Acrylic Concrete Stain Color Concentrate Bone X Dark.
Can you post a picture of the current condition?
Yes. Here are 3 pictures. I can seem to add anymore. I hope this gives you an idea.
Your issue is not sealer wearing but turning white from the sun in spots. The sealer is still intact there but discoloring. Adding more sealer on top will temporality fix the problem but the white haze will come back shortly in a matter of months.
The only real way to fix this issue is to chemically strip this all off. This can be very messy though around a pool. 🙁
What product do I need to strip this off? And then what do you recommend I use? Is there a better product to use as a stain and sealer for direct sun and chlorine?
Use a Concrete Paver Sealer Stripper by Clemons and pressure washing to remove. Seal after with the Super Seal 25 or the Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer.
There are not sealers and stains in one.
Thanks for the information. I took a close look today. And there are areas where the sealer actually flakes off when I rub it with my finger. Thanks for your help.
Did you receive my photos? They aren’t showing up on my end now.
Yes, and we responded to you above.
I have a 400s/f stamped concrete patio that needs resealing. The original contractor used a 50/50 mix of CSS Emulsion and Xylene. Which of these products is the closest match?
SuperSeal 25.
What about slippage after it rains and is walked on?
That would depend on the sealer type you are using and the surface type it is being applied too?
I have a stamped concrete pool deck that looked decent when i moved in 18 months ago. The appearance has dropped off dramatically in last 6 months. I dontt know what type of sealer was used last. What type of sealer should i use and shopuld i strip it. I believe some of the dark spots are from japanese maple leaf stains. Pressure washing doesnt help
The one pic is what it was like 18 months ago.
Thanks, Rod
That may be mildew. Have you tried watered down bleach to remove it? 1 part bleach to 4 parts water. Let sit for 10 minutes then rinse well. Once removed, try the Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer.
Tried bleach and also sodium percarbonate and scrubbed with a brush. It helped a tad.
thanks fur the quick reply. I’ll try some bleach again to clean it and then try the sealer
My neighbors & I are planning to have our stamped concrete walks & patios sealed this coming spring. They were sealed about 4 years ago but, we are not sure what the contractor used. My front walk & stoop are in direct sunlight for most of the day. As you can see from the attached photo’s, it has faded considerably. The dark area at the door is where our welcome mat typically lays.
Is it safe to apply a sealer without stripping the existing sealer? And, what sealer would you recommend?
You have to strip this to fix this. Your old sealer has turned white.
Flat, stamped concrete pool deck that is very slippery when wet. An anti slip water based application was rolled on about 4 years ago. I’m in the San Francisco East Bay Area with a Lowe’s and Home Depot nearby–what can I apply to this surface? Thank you!!!!!!!
Try Masonry Saver Decorative concrete sealer.
Thank you for the quick response!
my stamped concrete driveway is pitting. HELP
who sells the best sealer for stamped concrete driveway
Try Super Seal 30.
I sealed my stamped concrete patio ( around my pool ) and walkways last October. I used Behr Wet Look Sealer from Home Depot. It looked great for about 3 months but now looks terrible. Any thoughts on what I can/should do?Also what products/sealers do you recommend? I want a sealer that will last a couple of years, if possible. I live in Southern California. The water is hard. Not much rain, no snow and lots of sun. Thanks.
Picture please.
Pictures below
You will need to chemically strip this off. Once removed, try Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer.
I have used Eagle Supreme Seal from Home Depot to seal my driveway each of the past 3 years. I also had to use shark grip since my driveway is elevated. Each time, after a few months, the areas that are in the sun totally fade to a dull white, while the areas that do not get as much sun still look perfect with a gloss finish. What do you suggest that I do to get a more permanent gloss finish?
You will most likely need to strip it off and start over. Adding something on top will not fix the issue.
Our stamped patio is about 17 years old in Cincinnati, Ohio. It has been a few years since we sealed. I believe a solvent based sealer with shark grip was applied by the same professional who installed the stamped patio. Please advise on the recommended process and sealer to restore. Thank You!
Looks like the sealer turned white in the sunny areas? If so, you will need to chemically strip this off first.
Thank you!
We have just sealed our stamped concrete and have several bubbles, did everything required, how do we proceed to remove the seal and redo
See this for tips: https://www.concretesealerreview.com/how-to-fix-concrete-sealer-bubbles/
Our walkways were “sealed” by a fellow who, apparently had no idea of the correct product to use….they became slick as ice in the winter and are now showing signs of pitting. Have attached photos. We live in the northeast and get temperatures from below zero up to high90’s. What do you recommend we use to repair the walks?
Chemically strip with Clemons concrete sealer stripper. Final prep with a Cleaner Degreaser. Use the Supreme Shield SB-350 for sealer application after the prep.
I live in Ohio and have a stamped concrete patio that has turned mostly white. Looking for a sealer stripper and sealer. Like the wet look and probably need a grip additive. Thanks!
Chemically strip with Clemons concrete sealer stripper. Final prep with a Cleaner Degreaser. Use the Supreme Shield SB-350 for sealer application.
I have searched for the Supreme Shield SB-350 and cannot find it. The only thing that shows up is the Supreme Shield SB-600.
The 350 is the VOC compliant product for certain states of the 600. Typically an option under the 600. I would call them about it.
Can a solvent based acrylic sealer ( Super Sealer 30 ) be applied if a water based sealer was used the previous year? I understand that this is not advisable, as it my peel or white hazing will appear.
We would not do it as it could create an issue. Best to remove current coating first.
Our patio was poured two years ago with color mixed into the concrete. We had a temporary seal on it but that is now gone. What is the difference between the Supreme Shield SB-350 & Supreme Shield SB-600? Which one would you recommend for a no-gloss good seal? Thank you for any information.
Picture, please.
I have a 14 year old home and the last time the driveway, garage and back patio were sealed was about 6 years ago. I plan to do all 3 this fall. I read that early morning or late afternoon were the best times to seal but what is the ideal temp.? In Illinois it could be 90 degrees one day and 60 the next. Also, the last time it was sealed it was crazy slick, which is your favorite and “easiest” non slip additive? Finally, best product for a driveway that gets a lot of use?
70 is a great temp to apply. We use Shark Grip or Super Grip. Try Super Seal VOC.
Thanks so much!! Wish me luck!!
My stamped concrete pool deck is 12 years old and is in bad need of sealing. There are some cracks that need filled and then a good coat of seal is needed. I sealed it last year , but it faded badly. Any suggestions?
Post a picture, please.
We have a pressed concrete sidewalk that is badly in need of resealing. The company who installed it applied a stain only to the surface area. It is now scuffed in some areas and my dogs have urinated on it and it has lifted the stain in many spots. I stained and resealed it using products recommended by the Home Depot and it looked beautiful for about 3 months. Now, after just one winter in PA the color is lifting everywhere. What can I do to remedy this problem?
You should call a professional to fix this as it will not be easy for a Homeowner to remove and start over as needed.
We just had a stamped concrete patio installed and need to seal it. We stained it with a waterbased stain (light brown) and will eventually have a hot tub out there and we live in the PNW where its very rainy. Any ideas on a sealer that will make the color pop a bit and still not be so slippery? Thank you in advance!
Try Supreme Shield SB-600.
I have an epoxy pebbled finish… looks like granola. It is about 15 yrs old and I just recently removed a portable spa that has been there equally as long. Patio cleans up nicely, but finish is dull in all areas but spa footprint. Can I use any of your sealants to make this shiny again?
Try Super Seal 30.
Thank you so much for this site! It has given me hope that we can take on this project, although I would prefer to hire someone but can’t seem to find a professional in our area. We have a couple of issues that we would like to address: 1. The deck is 15 years old and the sealer is pretty much worn off. It looks dated and worn. There may be a couple of small spots under the deck, that did not see the sun/wear and is less worn but the deck is essentially in full sun. 2. When the… Read more »
Your prep products and the procedure is good. For the sealer, try the Super seal 30 or the Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer. No need to stain and would not work anyhow.
Thank you for your prompt response. Is there a product that we can use to “color” the stamped concrete in the pics above? I would like a more even color is that is possible.
No, that is not possible to stain it at this point. Some sealers can be tinted though. The Super Seal has some tint packs that can be added.
I have a pool patio stamped concrete in Nj. Looking for a sealer that will not darken too much and not give a wet look. It is a tan sand color and looking to preserve that color if possible. Thanks
To preserve the color you will need a sealer that lays on top and all of those will darken the overall look like a wet look. You can get away though with having a low or no-gloss shine.
Thanks.. what would be your best suggestion for me?
Try Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer or Supreme Shield SB-350.
Most of my patios are covered, one portion is not. I live in Idaho, zone 6
Look at the Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer.
Thank you! Should pressure washing be sufficient prior to application? How can I get the white discoloration off first? It is only in one section.
You would need to strip and you cannot spot strip just one area. If you strip you will need to strip all the patio. Does the white show when wet with water? If not, then you can probably get away with not stripping.
Thank you, it does show slightly when wet, bummer! Will any stripper work?
No. You need a speciality stripper for this. We use the Concrete Sealer Stripper from Clemons Concrete.
We just bought our house that is 12 yrs old and have no idea what has been used in the past on the stamped concrete, but it needs help. I was going to power wash it. Is there anything else I need to do and which sealer would be best? I would like the darker, wet, shiny look, but don’t want it to be slippery if it gets wet or icy. I have attached pictures of the front and the back patios. There is some where on both, and some white discoloration on the back patio.
But acrylic sealants only last 3-5 years and they are non penetrating. Isn’t there something better out there that can give a nice semi gloss look but actually last 7-10 years?
No, not possible.
I have a stamped colored concrete patio that needs re-sealed. We have never done so few questions. After reading it appears that I need to strip surface first? Do I use the Concrete Sealer Stripper by Clemons or Xylene? We live in Indiana so which sealant is best? It gets slippery so I either want a sealant that helps this or advise if we need to add Shark Bite. I prefer a matte look rather than shiny. We also need to caulk expansion joints. (Contractor never came back for this!) When in steps do we do this? After stripping? I… Read more »
Try xylene first to the white spots and see if that goes away. If so, go ahead and seal. Use the Supreme Shield SB-350 wet look sealer or the Masonry Saver Decorative Concrete Sealer.
If the xylene does not work, then you will need to strip all. Leave the joints alone. No need to caulk.
Is any sealer comparable to Supreme Shield SB600 that could be purchased without ordering online?
Thank you.
No, not in big box stores.
We had our stamped concrete sealed last fall. When it snowed, the walks became extremely hazardous …how can we prevent that in the future?
Add a grip into your sealer when you apply next time.
Our deck is stamped concrete with a wood look done by a contractor about 3 years ago. It began having the white ‘ghosting’ as shown in the attached photos soon after, which possibly appear to be where there are footprints from the application. The surface never really did have a nice finished look although he said he applied a sealer. He will not respond to our inquiries to give assistance on what to do. Xylene was mentioned by someone who looked at it, but we are concerned to go ahead until we are sure we know what we are doing.… Read more »
Make sure the area is clean and dry. Buy a gallon of xylene and apply it to one of the white spots. Let it dry and see if they go away. If so, apply the xylene to the entire area. Wait a month and see if the spots return, if they do not, reseal all with a product like the Supreme Shield SB-600. If the white spots do not go away, you will need to chemically strip all and that would require you removing those railings so they are not damaged.
Do not paint over this.
What steps need to be taken for a stamped concrete patio that was sealed two years ago with a water based sealer that looks faded and would like to go to an oil based sealer?
Post a picture please.
Actually my wife says it was very shiney and the colors were deep and darker so I would have to say yes it was shiney!!
Try the Super Seal Matte for this.
I actually already purchased the supreme shield sb 600 because it said it wouldn’t yellow or get the hazing plus wouldn’t be slippery I read on here you don’t need to add shark grip to it cause it’s to thin I am not sure what was used previously and don’t want to get the white film after completing so should I send back the supreme shield sb600 and get the superb seal mayte as a better option?
Hard to say. Can you post a picture of what it looks like now? Need to see if the current sealer is still prevalent.
I uploaded three pics of patio hopefully this helps and you can recommend the sealer for me! Thanks for all your help !
You still have a gloss sealer on there. Adding the SB-600 (which has no gloss) will not remove the current shine on the concrete but restore it. You should be able to use it but it will be shiny again when done.
It had a little sheen to it but I wouldn’t say it was shiney
Actually it is supreme shield an 600
Did the old sealer have a shine?
I have a stamped concrete patio it was sealed when installed 7 years ago. It I am not sure with what I was going to reseal with super seal 600 is that ok?
